For Cathy Faulkner, 32, it may sound simple to dream to have a small business so she can manage her time around raising her 5-year-old daughter. “We didn’t do this to be rich. We just wanted to have a comfortable life,” said Faulkner. Faulkner now owns Anna’s Tea Room, tucked in a quaint, idyllic seaside town of Folkestone, Kent. She and her husband ventured into the business in July 2017. “Sa business, kung ano ang nilagay mo, yun ang makukuha mo. Nakita ko rin yan sa parents ko sa Philippines na hard-working talaga sila,” she said. Many nurses come to the UK to be in the health care profession. But Faulkner chose a different path. A nursing graduate from St. Jude College Manila, she worked in the UK as healthcare support worker and met her husband. It was a well-thought decision not to pursue a nursing career in the UK. Faulkner believes it’s her destiny to have a business of her own. In San Rafael, Bulacan where she grew up, she lived under the shadow of her businessman-father. “Ang description sa akin nung nasa Pilipinas pa ako, yung anak ni Andy sa bakery. Siguro, ito talaga ang destiny ko,” she said. Anna’s tea room is the only shabby-chic tea house in Folkestone that offers instagrammable, rustic, home-cooked food from breakfast to tea time, where the most tea so far is the English-style tea and fruity teas. When Faulkner married in 2012, she not only wanted to be a hands-on mother but also planned to own a business. From scratch, she learned how to run a tea house, including baking the cakes herself. All the tea rooms in the touristy place of Folkestone are located in hotels. But Anna’s is one of the most popular in the area, receiving raves from both locals and tourists alike. “There is obviously some great venues around but Cathy likes going off menu so we can actually chose what we exactly like. And teas are amazing,” said Tracey Nunn, a Folkestone local. “The ambience is friendly and food is nice,” said Margie Brown, another resident of Folkestone. Faulkner also makes sure the food are palatable not only for the mouth but also for the eyes. Less than one year in the business, Faulkner and her husband is giving the business a good go and is hoping for the best.
