SAN FRANCISCO - Filipino-American barbers drew flak online for using Philippine flags as barber capes during the Golden State Warriors’ Filipino Heritage Night in Oakland, California.

Jayr Mallari, member of National Filipino Barbers Association (NFBA), took to Facebook to apologize over the incident, saying it was with good intention.

"Our intention was to use our platform to express pride in and raise awareness of our heritage by highlighting our flag design. It was not our intent to offend or inadvertently disrespect any of our fellow Filipinos or our country in any way," he wrote.

He added, "Moving forward, the NFBA and myself will no longer use Filipino Flag Barber Capes while providing haircuts. Our vision is to use the art of barbering as an instrument to build up and unify Filipinos across the world and will use the utmost care and diligence in respectfully expressing our admiration for the Filipino culture and our country."

NFBA barbers gave free haircuts to patrons at the Oracle Arena on March 10.

Despite the backlash, Mallari said he is happy to learn a lot from the event.

"My goal is to continue to connect, to continue to build relationships, to be more aware of my culture. And as far as the National Filipino Barber Association and everyone who has participated, they’re more aware of what’s going on," he said.
