FUKUOKA - Police are set to refer the head of a hospital in western Japan and two other doctors to prosecutors over fertility treatment that left a woman dead in 2016, investigative sources said Monday.The woman in her 30s died in December 2016 after undergoing an operation the previous month at St. Mother Hospital in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka Prefecture, to treat her ovarian congestion by inserting air under anesthesia.A portion of the large amount of air is suspected to have entered her blood vessels and reached her lungs to cause death, according to the sources.Medical experts said colored water, not air, is usually used in the medical procedure. It is rare for patients to die in fertility treatment.The doctor who conducted the operation has admitted to making a mistake in the operation. The police also believe another doctor involved in the operation and the hospital head bear responsibility over her death.The hospital is known for conducting highly specialized fertility treatment and has attracted patients nationwide.
