MANILA -- Some officials in Laguna are pushing for the dredging of Laguna Lake to increase its capacity to hold and store water and help solve the persistent flooding in towns and cities around the lake.

Biñan City Representative Arman Dimaguila has filed a resolution in Congress urging the House Committee on Ecology to summon the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), Laguna Lake Development Authority (LLDA), and other concerned agencies to study the proposed dredging of Laguna Lake.

Many villages in the towns and cities in the province of Laguna were once again flooded due to the southwest monsoon and the onslaught of tropical storms Crising, Dante, and Emong.

The flooding is being blamed on the shallow condition of Laguna Lake, which prevents waters from rivers from flowing properly into the lake.

Barangay Dela Paz in Biñan City, located right along the lake, is one of the areas frequently submerged in floods, with water taking as long as five months to recede.

In addition to dredging, Mayor Gel Alonte is also proposing the construction of pumping stations.

However, the mayor admitted that the local government does not have sufficient funds for such projects.

He appealed to the national government for assistance.

The barangays currently affected by flooding in Biñan City are Dela Paz, Malaban, Casile, Platero, and San Jose.

More than 11,465 families in Biñan City have been affected by the flooding.
