MANILA — Father Amado Picardal, known for criticizing the brutal drug war in Davao City, died Wednesday, according to the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines. He was 69 years old.

The congregation did not provide other details about his death.

“He was a passionate advocate of peace and social justice and a professor of theology who has touched and transformed the lives of many,” said Fr. Edilberto Cepe, the provincial superior of the Redemptorist Province of Cebu.

Known for his criticism of the Davao Death Squad (DDS) killings under then-Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, Picardal wrote a detailed report on the killings from 1998 to 2015.

His report became part of the information submitted to the International Criminal Court (ICC), which is now investigating Duterte over his drug war.
