Aplaya, Digos City, Davao del Sur on Monday afternoon, June 10.Eleanor Polancos Dela Peña, 54, was driving her pickup near her home when an unidentified assailant shot her in the head.The victim was declared lifeless by responding personnel of the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.The Digos City Police has launched a hot pursuit operation to apprehend the perpetrator and determine the motive behind the crime.&quot;Massive checkpoints were launched to cordon the whole province and tightened the security of border control points to prevent the suspect from escaping to nearby provinces,&quot; the Digos City Police said in its report.Digos City Police later said they have arrested the alleged perpetrator of Dela Peña&#x27;s shooting.Authorities said Arnel Dela Peña, 56, was arrested Monday night following their hot pursuit operations.&quot;The suspect was identified through the statements of the victim’s son, Kenneth De Leon, the CCTV footage near the crime scene, and witness descriptions,&quot; the Digos City Police said.The suspect was described as wearing a black helmet with the letter &quot;M,&quot; a blue hooded jacket, blue jeans, and riding a red motorcycle, which fit the description of the gunman.Upon arrest, police recovered live ammunition, a black helmet with the letter &quot;M,&quot; a blue hooded jacket, and two cellphones from the suspect.According to the Digos City Police, a possible motive for the Dela Peña&#x27;s killing is land conflict. Murder charges are being prepared by the police authorities against the perpetrator.<div>CONDEMNATION FROM IBP</div>The Integrated Bar of the Philippines strongly condemned the brutal killing of Dela Peña, who was a former IBP-Davao City president. The IBP Davao City chapter said they will not stop seeking justice until it is attained.<div><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1718063323870IBP-statement.jpg" style="width:950px" class="fr-fic fr-dib"/></div>&quot;Despite this tragedy, the legal community of Davao City reaffirms its commitment to the pursuit of justice and the protection of those who dedicate their lives to upholding the law,&quot; the IBP Davao City said in a statement.<div><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1718063341489IBP-statement-min.jpg" style="width:950px" class="fr-fic fr-dib"/></div>On the other hand, the IBP Eastern Mindanao said that the tragic death of Dela Peña is a grievous blow to the integrity of the justice system.They also urge the authorities to enhance protection measures for members of the legal profession who face increasing risks to their safety and lives.&quot;We call upon law enforcement agencies to spare no effort in swiftly apprehending those responsible for this cowardly act,&quot; the IBP Eastern Mindanao said.
