MANILA (UPDATED) — A magnitude 4.7 earthquake struck off the coast of Paluan town in Occidental Mindoro and was felt in nearby areas, including parts of Metro Manila on Thursday, the state seismology agency Phivolcs said.

The tectonic quake hit 37 kilometers southwest of Paluan at 9:53 a.m. It had a shallow depth of 33 kilometers, Phivolcs said in its second bulletin on the quake.

Shallow quakes tend to be stronger and are felt more by people. Phivolcs however said that the Paluan undersea tremor was unlikely to spawn aftershocks and damage to properties.

Intensity 2 — which could cause hanging objects to swing slightly — was felt in Tagaytay City, as well as in Alfonso and Mendez towns in Cavite, and in Mabini, Batangas, the agency said in the updated advisory.

The City of Manila, Navotas City, and Amadeo town in Cavite felt Intensity 1.

Meanwhile, Instrumental Intensity 3 was recorded in Puerto Galera in Oriental Mindoro and Mamburao in Occidental Mindoro.

Instrumental Intensities are detected and recorded by intensity meters installed in the said areas but may or may not be felt by people there, according to Phivolcs.

Thursday's quake comes as the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council is conducting a symposium on the preparedness for "The Big One," an anticipated massive quake that could hit Metro Manila and surrounding areas.

The Philippines will hold its second quarter national simultaneous earthquake drill on Friday, June 28.
