BAGUIO CITY, Philippines -- Baguio Midland Courier, a cornerstone of journalism in Northern Luzon, has released its final edition on Sunday, July 21.

The community newspaper started sweeping the streets on April 1947 and has continuously served as a trustworthy source of information in Baguio, extending to the whole of Cordillera Administrative Region.

Up until today.

BMC will cease its operations starting July 22, Publisher and Chief Operations Officer Gloria Antoinette Hamada previously announced in a Facebook post.

Leia Castro-Margate, a senior lecturer from the College of Arts in Communication at the University of the Philippines Baguio who also did research about community journalists in the city, said reading Midland's news has been part of Baguio locals' weekly routine.

She likened losing the services of Midland to losing a family member.

"Midland is a Sunday habit. If you grew up in Baguio, you would have grown up with it. So you see the loss feels personal to many. Like losing a family member," Castro-Margate told ABS-CBN News.

The journalism lecturer also discussed Midland's role in the City of Pines and beyond.

"It is a brand name that people trust. Sa personal or family level bago nauso ang social media, you use Midland for important announcements: pumasa ka ng exams, grumaduate, kinasal, namatay, pinaghahatian ang estate etc. Each locality needs a paper for legal notices to be published in. Siyempre yung news, kelangan mo ng trustworthy source," Castro-Margate, also a former assistant publisher for BMC, explained.

The closure was brought upon by unprecedented challenges -- a trend experienced by newspapers around the globe -- according to the publication.

In a statement posted Saturday, Midland's management and staff thanked their readers for supporting the publication for almost eight decades.

"The management and staff of the Midland Courier under the Hamada Printers & Publishers’ Corp. wish to thank all our esteemed readers, advertisers, and supporters for being with us for the past 77 years. Maraming, maraming salamat po!"

The City Government of Baguio has passed Resolution 430-2024, expressing its "profoundest appreciation" to the community newspaper for its contributions in their locality.
