CEBU — The local government unit of Lapu-Lapu City has issued a cease and desist order to a resort on Olango Island where a 43-year-old female tourist died after participating in a water activity.

The incident was caught on cellphone video in Sitio Basdako in Barangay San Vicente last July 11.

It could be seen that the victim was lying at the tip of the inflatable jumping balloon waiting to be bounced upward by the staff.

The victim then bounced upward and turned upside down, which resulted in her head directly hitting the jumping balloon and falling into the water unconscious.

The victim was rushed to the hospital. After a week, she succumbed to her injuries.

With the stop order, the floating cottage is now also closed and will be probed.

Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Ahong Chan inspected the area to ensure their documents complied with safety guidelines.

The management of the floating cottage has agreed to shoulder the victim's expenses.

The Lapu-Lapu City tourism office said it will look into the incident "to prevent or avoid similar incidents in the future."

The office is set to meet with boatmen, tour guide operators, and other stakeholders to discuss proper handling and safety procedures for ferrying tourists to Olanggo Island and the operation of sports activities.

The meeting will also discuss the protection of tourists and ensure "they will have a good experience in Lapu-Lapu City," said Gary Lao, the city’s tourism officer.
