An 11-year old girl was confirmed dead in a flash flood that occurred Monday in Sitio Mangitngit, Barangay Lower Natimao-an, Carmen in Cebu province.

Six others are still missing, including a newly wed couple.

Based on initial investigation by the town’s disaster risk reduction and management office, 17 individuals were on board a pick-up truck  that was swept away into a creek.

Ten individuals were rescued and seven were initially missing. All of them attended a wedding.

“Nakaagi sila og gamay nga creek unya ni overflow ang creek so estimate sa driver nga kaya ra ang load sa pick-up to cross nga overflow nga water (They passed by a small creek that overflowed. The driver estimated that it can pass the overflow),” said Engineer Rodger Suico, chief of the Carmen DRRMO.

However, they were swept away by the strong current as heavy rains were experienced in Cebu Monday.

The body of the female victim was found in Barangay Luyang, about five kilometers from the site of the incident.

The town’s DRRMO is still conducting search and rescue operations to find the missing six individuals.

Meanwhile in Bindoy, Negros Oriental, a 70-year-old died after being trapped in his house when a flash flood occurred in Barangay Cabugan.

Forty families are currently in an evacuation center after a flash flood occurred in their community.

Officials are validating reports that the river control dike was severely damaged after the strong rain.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development also gave food packs and other basic needs to evacuated families.
