MANILA — A magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck the waters off Northern Samar on Monday morning, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

The tectonic tremor hit 34 kilometers northwest of Pambujan town before noon.

While the quake is not expected to cause damage, it could spawn aftershocks, Phivolcs warned.

At a depth of 10 kilometers, the earthquake was felt at a strong Intensity 5 in Bobon, Catarman, Laoang, Lavezares, Palapag, Rosario, and San Roque in Northern Samar.

At this intensity, “strong shaking” is felt throughout buildings and hanging objects could swing violently, Phivolcs said.

It said the following intensities were also observed.

Intensity 4 - Pilar and Sorsogon City in Sorsogon

Intensity 3 - Legazpi and Tabaco cities in Albay; Virac, Catanduanes; Masbate, Masbate; Bulusan and Irosin, Sorsogon; Burauen and Javier, Leyte

Intensity 2 - Calubian, Hilongos, Leyte, and Mahaplag in Leyte; Hinunangan and Sogod in Southern Leyte

Earthquakes regularly strike the Philippines, which sits along the Pacific Ring of Fire, an arc of intense seismic and volcanic activity that stretches from Japan through Southeast Asia and across the Pacific basin. — With a report from Agence France-Presse
