Over 400,000 liters of oil collected from sunken MT Terranova

More than 400,000 liters of oil have been siphoned from the sunken MT Terranova more than a month after it sank off the waters of Bataan, the Philippine Coast Guard said Monday. 

As od August 25, Sunday, the contracted salvor, Harbor Star, reported over 402,000 liters of collected oily waste from 19 to 25 August 2024 with the following breakdown: 


19 Aug - 2,350 liters

20 Aug - 36,100 liters

21 Aug - 42,026 liters

22 Aug - 81,136 liters

23 Aug - 17,103 liters

24 Aug - 121,724 liters

25 Aug - 101,603 liters

The Harbor Star said that the rate of oily waste flow during the 25 August 2024 operation was 13,614 liters per hour.

Siphoning operation from two MTKR Terranova tanks to MTKR Helen Marie temporarily stopped to change the receiving tank.

The BRP Sindangan (MRRV-4407) used water cannon to agitate oil sheens at ground zero, while BRP Malamawi (FPB-2403) conducted area monitoring.

The Coast Guard said an oil spill response team also conducted coastal and maritime patrol in the vicinity waters of Sitio Bagong Sibol, Barangay Mt. View, Mariveles, Bataan near the sunken MTKR Jason Bradley.

The contracted salvor, FES Challenger, continued re-sealing and patching operations of the vessel’s manhole and air vents.
