Richard Esguerra, <a href="https://sports.abs-cbn.com/uaap/volleyball/photos">ABS-CBN Sports</a></figcaption></figure></div>MANILA, Philippines -- (UPDATED) University of Santo Tomas (UST) squandered a two-set lead, but recovered in the fifth set to fight off a tough Adamson University team in the UAAP Season 81 women&#x27;s volleyball tournament on Sunday at the Mall of Asia Arena.Rookie sensation Eya Laure shone in her seniors debut for the Golden Tigresses, who hacked out a hard-earned 25-21, 25-21, 24-26, 24-26, 15-6 victory over the Lady Falcons in front of a packed crowd.Adamson saved three set points in the fourth set, with veteran middle blocker Joy Dacoron coming up with big plays to send the match to a deciding frame.But the Lady Falcons ran out of steam in the do-or-die set, as UST raced to a 5-0 lead and never looked back.&quot;Up and down &#x27;yung laro kanina,&quot; said UST coach Kungfu Reyes afterward. &quot;Control namin &#x27;yung first two sets, third and fourth ay kaliwa&#x27;t kanan. Nagkaroon na lang ng breaks of the game sa dulo, pero noong fifth set naman, nanalo kami.&quot;&quot;Panalo pa rin, &#x27;yun ang importante,&quot; he added.Laure, UST&#x27;s much-hyped rookie, had 17 points on 13 kills, 3 blocks, and one clutch ace in her debut. Veteran spiker Sisi Rondina added 17 points, despite struggling by her own admission. But the Lady Falcons showed their poise in the third frame, when they rallied from a 17-13 deficit behind an outpouring of running kills by Dacoron. Adamson even reached set point first, 24-21, before Rondina and Laure conspired in a 3-0 blast that forced a deuce. But Adamson skipper Eli Soyud came through with a pair of clutch hits, extending the match.With all the momentum on their side, the Lady Falcons opened up a 15-5 lead in the fourth frame and appeared to be cruising to victory. But steadily, the Tigresses clawed their way back, with Alessandrini and Kecelyn Galdones coming up with big plays to bring UST back. Adamson also began to succumb to their own errors: they committed three straight miscues that pushed the Tigresses to a 23-19 lead.A smart tip by Laure put UST at match point, 24-21, but an attack error by Caitlyn Viray kept Adamson alive. Dacoron took over from there, blocking Rondina then scoring twice off the UST attacker for a 25-24 lead. In the final rally of the set, Rondina&#x27;s attack hit the tape of the net. It was UST&#x27;s 10th error of the fourth frame.&quot;Siyempre, learning pa rin &#x27;yan,&quot; Reyes said of UST&#x27;s collapse in the fourth frame. &quot;May confidence kami (kay Sisi). Good thing, sabi ko nga sa kanya, i-redeem niya ang sarili niya sa fifth set.&quot;The Tigresses opened up a 5-0 lead in the fifth frame, with 3 of their points coming from Adamson&#x27;s own errors. The Lady Falcons were never able to get into a rhythm, and UST led by as much as 9 points, 13-4, before Alessandrini punctuated the win with a block of Bern Flora&#x27;s attack.UST, a preseason favorite, needed two hours and 18 minutes to complete the win. They had a 50-41 lead on kills, and scored 11 aces. It was an error-strewn game for both teams: UST committed 41 errors, and Adamson gave away 44 free points from their miscues.Flora had 14 points, while Soyud finished with 13 for the LAdy Falcons. Dacoron finished with 10, and Chiara Permentilla scored 12 markers.
