Boxing: Ex-world champ Brian Viloria breaks extended layoff with 8-rounder

<div class="embed-wrap"><figure data-feedback="fb:likes,fb:comments"><img src="http://sa.kapamilya.com/absnews/abscbnnews/media/2017/sports/03/01/viloria-030117.jpg"/><figcaption><div class="embed-desc">At 36, Brian Viloria knows he doesn&#x27;t have the luxury of time as he chases one last shot glory. <cite>Al Bello, Getty Images/Agence France-Presse</cite></div></figcaption></figure></div><p>MANILA — Brian “The Hawaiian Punch” Viloria will make one final push for another world title when he climbs the ring at Ryogoku Sumo Arena in Tokyo on Thursday.</p><p>Viloria, a former world flyweight and light-flyweight titleholder who is coming out of an 18-month layoff, takes on Mexico’s Ruben Montoya. </p><p>“I took over a year off to think about things, to reset, to spend a little more time with my family,” Viloria said in a report posted on <a href="http://philboxing.com/news/story-125917.html" target="_blank">Philboxing.com</a>.</p><p>“It gave me time to think about the next step in my boxing career. I’m 36 now (so) I know I don’t have much time left. I came to a conclusion for me to make one more run, one more campaign towards another world title fight.” </p><p>The last time Viloria fought was against Nicaraguan Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez in October 2015. He lost by a ninth round stoppage in a bid for the world flyweight crown. </p><p>Viloria, who resumed training at Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles under Freddie Roach’s chief assistant Marvin Somodio, will square off against Motoya in 8 rounds.</p><p>Viloria holds a record of 36-5, with 22 KOs, while Montoya sports a record of 14-4-1, with 9 KOs.</p><p>For more sports coverage, visit the <a href="http://sports.abs-cbn.com/" target="_blank">ABS-CBN Sports website</a>.</p>
