The Fighting Maroons finally had a good first quarter, as Ricci Rivero and CJ Cansino displayed a shooting clinic against UE. Cansino scored six straight points in the last 70 seconds of the opening period for an early 34-13 separation.The Fighting Maroons continued their dominance in the succeeding quarter, as Rivero and Carl Tamayo drained three-pointers. Tamayo stretched UP’s lead at the 3:25 mark after a stop-and-pop basket before Zav Lucero hit a pair of free throws for a commanding 48-19 lead. The Warriors, however, appeared to come to life in the final quarter as Clint Escamis and Kyle Paranada slowly reduced the 30-point deficit to 11 points. After Escamis scored three free throws, Paranada uncorked back-to-back 3s to trim UP’s lead, 73-60, with 5:55 left to play. Paranada hit another tough basket in the last three minutes to trail 75-64, but Maodo Diouf kept on answering back for the Fighting Maroons to avoid a UE comeback. Lucero and Rivero spearheaded UP with 14 points apiece while Cansino and Tamayo added 10 and 8, respectively.Meanwhile, Escamis ended the match with a game-high 16 points. Paranada and Kris Pagsanjan had 25 combined markers.

The Fighting Maroons pulled away from the get-go to clobber the winless Red Warriors, 81-66, in UAAP Season 84 men’s basketball on Saturday.
