For the first time since 2001, Manny Pacquiao will be fighting without coach Freddie Roach.

Roach, a multiple trainer-of-the-year winner, is widely credited for developing Pacquiao from a one-dimensional fighter to an 8-division world champion. He trained Pacquiao in his past 34 fights.

So what made Pacquiao decide to end their nearly 17-year partnership?

Michael Koncz, Pacquiao's business adviser, said it has a lot to do with Pacquiao’s defeat to Australian boxer Jeff Horn in July 2017.

"There were some concerns Manny had in the last fight and some statements Freddie made to the media that Manny wasn't very pleased about," Koncz said in an interview with ESPN’s Dan Rafael.

This meant Pacquiao has ended a partnership that produced some of his most jaw-dropping victories over the likes of Marco Antonio Barrera, Erik Morales, Ricky Hatton, Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito.

This also meant that Pacquiao will be relying on childhood friend Buboy Fernandez to train him for his bout against world welterweight champion Lucas Matthysse on July 15.

"That's Manny's decision. Manny has told me Buboy will be handling the training on this fight," Koncz said.

"What's important to Manny is that he has one voice to listen to in the corner that he trusts, and I guess that's Buboy for this fight."
