SEA Games: Gonzales, Huey overwhelm compatriots to notch men’s doubles gold

In a rematch of their 2019 all-Filipino final, Treat Huey and Ruben Gonzales clinched tennis men’s doubles gold over defending champions Francis Casey Alcantara and Jeson Patrombon at the 31st Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Vietnam on Saturday.Top seeds Huey and Gonzales overwhelmed Alcantara and Patrombon, 6-1, 6-4, at the Hanaka Paris Ocean Park in Tu Son, Bac Ninh province. More than two years ago, Huey and Gonzales settled for silver after their straight-sets loss to their compatriots at the 30th SEA Games in Manila.Their final, the first match on Centre Court on Saturday morning, began with Huey and Gonzales taking a 4-1 lead. They broke once again to be at 5-1, courtesy of a forehand down the line return of serve winner from Gonzales, and quickly sealed the first set, 6-1.In the second set, 2022 Savannah Challenger champions Huey and Gonzales gained a 4-2 edge.Alcantara, the 2009 Australian Open boys’ doubles champion and 2022 M25 Cairo doubles winner, and Patrombon, a former World No. 9 juniors player, aimed to catch up and managed to trail at 4-5.With Huey and Alcantara serving for the gold, they earned four match points and clinched victory, 6-4, on their second match point after Patrombon returned Huey’s serve with a long forehand.On their way to the final, Huey and Gonzales got a bye in the first round.They ousted Syed Mohamad Agil Syed Naguib and Hao Shen Koay of Malaysia in the quarterfinals (6-2, 6-2) and Minh Tuan Pham and Linh Giang Trinh of Vietnam in the semifinals (6-4, 6-2).Meanwhile, Alcantara and Patrombon defeated Mathew David Krusling and Samneang Long of Cambodia in the first round (6-2, 6-1) and No. 3 seeds Christopher Rungkat and Muhammad Rifqi Fitriadi of Indonesia (6-1, 7-5) in the quarterfinals.
