MANILA, Philippines -- Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chairman William "Butch" Ramirez received positive feedback from Education Secretary Leonor Briones regarding his endorsement to retain Physical Education (PE) in the curriculum of the national education system.

This, in response to Senator Sherwin Gatchalian's suggestion to temporarily remove PE so that educators can focus on "key subjects" during the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Talagang hindi na magiging traditional ang pagtuturo. For example, magko-concentrate tayo sa mahahalagang subjects, tulad ng Math, Science, Reading at babawasan na muna, tatanggalin muna 'yung mga Home Economics, PE. Hindi na tayo makaka-PE ngayon kaya magko-contentrate muna tayo sa pinakamahahalagang subjects para tuloy-tuloy pa rin ang pag-aaral ng bata," Gatchalian said during an interview on DZMM earlier this month.

Ramirez wrote to Briones to stress the importance of PE in the overall education of the youth and in nation building. Briones responded personally to Ramirez, assuring him that she agrees with his stand and shall fight for the retention of PE in schools.

The PSC, despite the restrictions imposed during the COVID-19 pandemic, have remained active in sharing information on sports.
