Although Jeff Chan didn’t contribute much in scoring in his debut for Barangay Ginebra, his presence and basketball IQ were a factor in the Gin Kings’ 134-107 rout of Columbian Dyip on Wednesday, said coach Tim Cone.

“(Chan's) presence allowed us to play small ball,” Cone said following their victory.

“I thought he made a big impact early. He kind of settled us down and brought us back into the game by just being a smart veteran and making smart passes.”

Before acquiring Julian Sargent from GlobalPort in exchange for Paolo Taha, the Kings secured Chan from Phoenix in exchange for a 2019 first-round draft pick after a lengthy negotiation.

The sweet-shooting guard only made 4 points in more than 19 minutes of action for Ginebra on Wednesday. He made all of his 4 points from the free-throw line.

His presence, however, allowed the Kings to space the floor.

The win over the Dyip sent the Kings to a 3-way logjam with Magnolia and GlobalPort at 6th place with 4-5 cards each.

But Cone is confident they will be able to get a more favorable seeding in the playoffs once Chan gets more acquainted to their system.

“I think we can still get to a couple of rungs higher especially if Jeff Chan gets into more of what we're doing and has a better understanding,” said the Ginebra mentor.
