Dwight Howard has finalized a buyout with the Brooklyn Nets and will sign a one-year deal with the Washington Wizards once he clears waivers, according to a report from The Athletic on Tuesday.

Per the report, Howard will join Washington via the taxpayer mid-level exception, worth $5.4 million over one year.

The Nets sent two future second-round picks, cash considerations and center Timofey Mozgov to the Charlotte Hornets for Howard on June 20, and reports emerged the following day that Howard and the Nets were working on a buyout to remove his $23.8 million 2018-19 salary from their books.

Before the buyout, the 32-year-old Howard was entering the final season of a three-year, $70.5 million deal he signed with the Atlanta Hawks in the summer of 2016.

Atlanta traded him to the Hornets on June 20, 2017, less than a year after he joined the Hawks and exactly a year before the most recent trade to the Nets.

Howard averaged 16.6 points -- his highest figure since 2013-14 -- 12.5 rebounds and 1.6 blocks per game with the Hornets last season in 81 games (all starts).

He has career averages of 17.4 points, 12.7 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game in 14 seasons with the Orlando Magic (2004-2012), Los Angeles Lakers (2012-13), Houston Rockets (2013-16), Hawks and Hornets.

He hasn't made an All-Star appearance since a run of eight-straight selections ended during the 2013-14 campaign.

The Wizards had a frontcourt opening to fill after trading Marcin Gortat, who started 400 games over the last five seasons for Washington, to the Los Angeles Clippers for guard Austin Rivers last week. By many accounts, Gortat and five-time All-Star John Wall had significant personal issues between them.

Washington signed former Cleveland Cavaliers forward Jeff Green to a minimum deal earlier on Tuesday.
