Richard Esguerra, <a href="https://sports.abs-cbn.com/ncaa/basketball/photos">ABS-CBN Sports</a></figcaption></figure></div>MANILA, Philippines -- (UPDATE) Edgar Charcos took over in the final quarter to power University of Perpetual Help past Mapua University, 80-78, in their first game of the NCAA Season 95 men&#x27;s basketball tournament on Tuesday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.The guard scored his team&#x27;s last 11 points, including the insurance free throw with 3.3 ticks to go, to give the Altas a winning start in the post-Prince Eze era.Charcos finished with 16 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals, while Rey Peralta tallied a game-high 20 points to spearhead the Altas&#x27; charge.&quot;It&#x27;s a show of character para sa team,&quot; said Perpetual Help coach Frankie Lim, who noted that Mapua blew them out by 38 points during a pre-season game, which was a concern of his heading into the contest.&quot;Inisip ko, baka nasa isip pa nila &#x27;yung larong &#x27;yun. After a bucket by Noah Lugo knotted the count at 69 with 7:27 to play, the veteran point guard took matters into his own hands. His free throws gave the Altas the lead for good, and sparked a personal 8-0 blast that put Perpetual in control, 77-69.A three-pointer by JP Nieles ended the silence for the Cardinals, but Charcos responded with another bucket for a 79-72 spread with 2:35 left.The Cardinals refused to fold, scoring 6 straight points -- capped by a Laurenz Victoria triple with 8.2 ticks to go -- to make it a one-point game. Off a timeout, however, they were forced to foul Charcos who made the first free throw before missing the second, thus allowing the clock to run out on Mapua&#x27;s attempt at a comeback.&quot;Big game from (Ben) Adamos, Jielo (Razon), si Tonton Peralta, and, of course, Charcos -- he&#x27;s the leader of this team,&quot; said Lim in praise of his veteran core. Adamos, a transferee from San Beda University, finished with 10 rebounds and 2 blocks, while Razon added 10 markers.Sophomore forward Warren Bonifacio led the Cardinals with 15 points on 7-of-11 shooting, along with 9 rebounds. Cyril Gonzales added 14 points and 5 steals.
