Akhuetie, Dagangon power West past East in NCAA All-Star

Even with all the confusion on team names, Bright Akhuetie and the West powered through a massive victory versus the East. <em>Arvin Lim, ABS-CBN Sports</em></div></figcaption></figure></div><h3>Akhuetie named All-Star Game MVP</h3><p>Perpetual Help&#x27;s Bright Akhuetie and Gab Dagangon came through with their best games as West demolished the East, 111-77, in the third NCAA All-Star Game at The Arena in San Juan City on Friday.</p><p>Akhuetie barreled his way to 16 points and nine boards while Dagangon scattered 14 points as the West cruised to an easy victory to give a 2-1 (win-loss) edge over the East squad.</p><p>It was also a big departure to West&#x27;s tight 89-88 win over the East a year ago with Jonathan Grey and Mark Cruz delivering the killer blows.</p><p>Akhuetie was named All-Star Game MVP.</p><p>&quot;The most important thing here is that this game is for the all the fans, for the league and all the players who made it to this special occasion,&quot; said West coach Jamike Jarin.</p><p>Earlier, St. Benilde&#x27;s Yankie Haruna edged San Beda&#x27;s Eugene Toba of Nigeria to win the slam dunk competition.</p><p>Haruna, a 22-year-old Fil-Am from New Jersey, defeated Arellano U&#x27;s Lervin Flores in the dunk-off for the second and last spot in the finals after they tied with 49 points apiece after the elimination round.</p><p>Haruna completed a two-handed jam off a one-handed pass by ONE Championship heavyweight titlist Brandon Vera and then witnessed Toba muff his final dunk.</p><p>Haruna beat Toba, 79-76.</p><p>The 6-11 Toba, who will see action for the first time next year, would have won it with just a clean, completed dunk after Haruna couldn&#x27;t complete his dunk over three players.</p><p>It was Haruna&#x27;s first dunk title after losing to last year&#x27;s winner Jebb Bulawan of the Lyceum of the Philippines University.</p><p>In the three-point shooting contest, San Beda&#x27;s AC Soberano fired 21 points in the finals to defeat San Sebastian&#x27;s RK Ilagan and Mapua&#x27;s Exe Biteng.</p><p>Jose Rizal&#x27;s Darius Estrella, Cadell Buño, and Marvin Hayes topped the Shooting Stars Contest while Mapua’s Darell Menina triumphed in the Skills Challenge.</p><div><strong>Box Scores:</strong></div><p>WEST 111 - Akhuetie 16, Dagangon 14, Jalalon 10, Salado 10, Tankoua 10, Calisaan 9, Grospe 7, Pontejos 7, Fabian 7, Potts 6, Sara 5, Teodoro 4, Cadavis 2, Coronel 2, Costelo 2.</p><p>EAST 77 - Morada 13, Fajarito 8, Nambatac 8, Haruna 7, Munsayac 6, Onwubere 6, Ayaay 6, Baltazar 6, Domingo 4, Estrella 3, Luib 2, Sollano 2, Biteng 2, Menina 2, Caduyac 2.</p><div><strong>Quarters: 35-17, 52-38, 81-55, 111-77.</strong></div><p>For more sports coverage, visit the <a href="http://sports.abs-cbn.com">ABS-CBN Sports website</a>.</p>
