How smaller gloves changed betting odds for Mayweather-McGregor

The betting odds for the Floyd Mayweather-Conor McGregor showdown seem to have shifted a bit after the recent ruling by the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) allowing the fighters to use 8-ounce gloves in their junior-middleweight fight.

Boxers fighting over the 147-pound welterweight limit are usually required to wear 10-ounce gloves, but the NSAC voted unanimously to grant a one-time exception to allow 8-ounce gloves in the Mayweather-McGregor fight.

William Hill US moved McGregor’s odds to plus-425 (bet $100 to win $425) from plus-450 two weeks ago, according to Boxing Scene.

The slight shift given the gloves rule change notwithstanding, Mayweather is still the favorite to win.

“With the decision on the 8-ounce gloves, we moved our price on Mayweather from -600 to -550 (requiring a $550 bet for a $100 profit),” said Nick Bogdanovich, director of trading at William Hill US.

ESPN fight analyst Max Kellerman thinks Mayweather gets the upper hand with the use of smaller gloves.

He pointed out that the undefeated American has been using 8-ounce gloves in the past 49 fights.

“(And) he’s the one that will be doing all the hitting,” Kellerman said. "(McGregor landing cleanly on Mayweather) will not happen. The chances of that happening is zero, there's nothing McGregor could do to touch Floyd."
