Asian Games: Indonesia outlasts Philippines in women's volleyball

<div class="embed-wrap"><figure data-feedback="fb:likes,fb:comments"><img src="http://sa.kapamilya.com/absnews/abscbnnews/media/2018/tvpatrol/08/23/20180825-indonesia.jpg"/><figcaption>Majoy Baron (left) and the Philippines were denied in 4 sets by a gutsy Indonesia side on Saturday. <em>Courtesy of the 2018 Asian Games website</em></figcaption></figure></div><p>JAKARTA—<strong>(UPDATED)</strong> Buoyed by massive fan support, Indonesia overwhelmed the Philippines 25-20, 25-20, 26-24, 25-22 in the women’s volleyball competition of the 2018 Asian Games at the Gelora Bung Karno sports complex on Saturday evening.</p><p>Aprilia Manganang powered the Indonesians to the win, their second in Pool A, while sending the Philippines to its third loss of the group stage. The powerful open spiker finished with 28 points, 27 of which came on kills.</p><p>Despite the loss, it was an inspired performance by the Filipinas who were thrilled to have taken a set off the host team. Indonesia beat the Philippines in straight sets the last time they played in the 2015 Southeast Asian Games.</p><ul class="op-related-articles">	<li><a href="https://news.abs-cbn.com/sports/08/26/18/volleyball-kaya-namin-sila-ph-takes-pride-in-good-showing-vs-indonesia">Volleyball: ‘Kaya namin sila’ — PH takes pride in good showing vs. Indonesia</a></li></ul><p>“S&#x27;yempre sobrang happy, but of course naniniwala pa rin kami na mayroon pang ia-angat &#x27;yung team namin,” head coach Shaq delos Santos said.</p><p>“Nagkaroon lang kami ng maraming errors sa service,” he also said. “Ang receive, nag-improve kami ng receive, but ‘yung attack namin ang medyo nagkulang kami. Naredo, ABS-CBN News</em></div><p>The Filipinas showed their grit in the third set, however, with Mylene Paat giving a boost of energy off the bench, and setter Jia Morado providing a lift in crunch time. Kills by Alyssa Valdez and Kianna Dy put the Philippines up 22-21, before a back-row hit by Manganang tied the frame once more.</p><p>The Philippines reached set point for the first time, 24-23, off a crosscourt attack by Jaja Santiago, before Manganang scored once more for the deuce. Santiago, who sat out a bulk of the third set, would not be denied late as she scored off the hands of Amalia Fajrina, then fired an ace to wrap up the win in Set 3.</p><p>Indonesia raced to a 16-12 lead in Set 3 before Paat and Maika Ortiz again came through with some huge plays to bring the Philippines back in the game. Cha Cruz also shone, with her down-the-line hit putting the Filipinas up 18-17 and prompting Indonesia’s coach to bring a resting Manganang back in the contest.</p><p>The high-leaping spiker took over from there, scoring three of their next four points to put Indonesia back on top. Another Manganang kill sent Indonesia to match point, 24-20; the Philippines saved two off attacks by Santiago and Valdez but a miscommunication in the final rally doomed the visitors&#x27; comeback attempt.</p><p>“Hindi kami nawawalan ng pag-asa,” said delos Santos. “Pagdating ng quarterfinals, meron pa ulit kaming laro doon sa baba, &#x27;yung qualification. So hopefully mas mag-perform kami ng maganda dahil alam namin na andoon pa rin kami sa process and malaki pa ang i-improve ng mga bata.”</p><p>Valdez led the Philippines with 16 points and 14 excellent receptions, while Santiago added 12 markers. </p><p>The Filipinas completed its campaign in Pool A with a 1-3 win-loss record, with its lone win coming against Hong Kong.</p><p>Nevertheless, the Philippines should still make it to the quarterfinals as Japan is favored to doom Hong Kong to a winless stint in their group.</p><div><strong>For more sports coverage, visit the <a href="http://sports.abs-cbn.com">ABS-CBN Sports website</a>.</strong></div>
