PBA Media Bureau.</figcaption></figure></div>(UPDATED) Calvin Abueva was dominant as the Magnolia Hotshots powered past the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters, 96-86, to secure their spot in the semifinals of the 2021 PBA Philippine Cup. &quot;The Beast&quot; put up a monster double-double of 20 points and 19 rebounds, while Paul Lee waxed hot in the first half en route to a 24-point performance as the Hotshots completed a two-game sweep of the E-Painters in their best-of-3 quarterfinal series.Magnolia built a big lead in the first quarter and had an answer every time that the Elasto Painters threatened in their game on Thursday at the Don Honorio Ventura State University Gym in Bacolor, Pampanga.The third-seeded Hotshots will face either the Meralco Bolts or the NLEX Road Warriors in the best-of-seven semifinals. &quot;It&#x27;s very hard talaga na kalaban &#x27;yung Rain or Shine. Well-coached, at the same time, they have the system. I think they are No. 1 defensive team sa liga natin,&quot; Magnolia coach Chito Victolero said after their victory.&quot;I told my players, it&#x27;s a defensive battle from start to finish. We need to execute on both ends of the floor,&quot; he added. &quot;Thank you sa mga players ko. Nag-commit sila doon sa gusto naming mangyari.&quot;Lee got off to a fast start, scoring 11 points in the first quarter to help the Hotshots build a comfortable lead. Rain or Shine recovered in the second and third periods, however, thanks in part to veteran guard James Yap who scored 12 points in the middle periods.Yap gave Rain or Shine some momentum heading into the halftime break as he beat the buzzer with a long three-pointer. In the third frame, he conspired with Rey Nambatac to further cut into the deficit, as they drilled back-to-back triples to make it a four-point game, 59-55, with over five minutes to go.However, the Elasto Painters squandered a golden opportunity when Nambatac muffed two charities in the closing seconds of the quarter that would have tied the game. Instead, Magnolia headed into the fourth with a 71-69 lead.After being silenced in the third frame, Lee burst back into action in the fourth, and he got help from Jio Jalalon. They anchored an 13-2 run that pushed their lead back to double-digits, 84-71, with over seven minutes to play.The E-Painters never quite recovered, though a Nambatac three-pointer got them to within six points, 92-86, with a minute and a half to go. Magnolia was ready to answer, however, and this time it was the veteran Mark Barroca who connected on two floaters in the final minute to ensure the Hotshots&#x27; victory.&quot;Kailangan lang talaga namin mag-grind ng mag-grind, for 48 minutes,&quot; Victolero said of the key to their success.Jalalon finished with 16 points and six assists, and Ian Sangalang also finished with a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds. Like they did in Game 1, the Hotshots dominated the boards, tallying a 63-36 rebounding edge. They also grabbed a whopping 26 offensive rebounds. Abueva alone had 10 offensive boards, matching ROS&#x27; output as a team.Yap finished with 16 points, going scoreless in the fourth quarter.
