<div class="embed-wrap"><figure data-feedback="fb:likes,fb:comments"><img alt="PVL Media." src="https://sa.kapamilya.com/absnews/abscbnnews/media/2022/life/10/11/20221011-pvl-media-2.jpg"/><figcaption>The Petro Gazz Angels celebrate after scoring against the Choco Mucho Flying Titans. <em>PVL Media.</em></figcaption></figure></div><p>MANILA, Philippines -- (<strong>UPDATED</strong>) The Petro Gazz Angels showed great composure in overcoming Choco Mucho in three sets to open their campaign in the 2022 Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Reinforced Conference, Tuesday at the PhilSports Arena.</p><p>Behind a superb debut from import Lindsey Vander Weide and an all-around effort from Jonah Sabete, the Gazz Angels snatched a 27-25, 25-22, 28-26, out-executing the Flying Titans down the stretch each time. </p><p>Vander Weide fired 25 points on 20 kills, three blocks and two aces, while Sabete did a little bit of everything in putting up 14 points, 14 digs, and 11 excellent receptions. The Gazz Angels had an 8-2 advantage in kill blocks in the match. </p><p>It made for a strong start to Petro Gazz&#x27;s long-delayed title defense. They had won the 2019 Reinforced Conference, but the tournament wasn&#x27;t held in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. </p><p>&quot;Hindi na namin iniisip, actually, &#x27;yung title defense. Mas priority namin &#x27;yung coming from last conference na medyo bad performance, to improve ngayong [conference],&quot; PetroGazz coach Rald Ricafort said.</p><p>With each set going down the wire, the Gazz Angels proved to have better poise, thanks in large part to Vander Weide, who drilled the clutch shots in the end game. The American import fired the final two hits in an extended first set, then conspired with MJ Phillips in crunch time of the second to give PetroGazz a 2-0 lead.</p><p>The third set was another extended affair, with Choco Mucho erasing a six-point deficit, thanks to Desiree Cheng&#x27;s service game. An offspeed hit by Sabete put the Gazz Angels at match point, 24-23, but Choco Mucho import Odina Aliyeva answered with a crosscourt hit to extend the frame.</p><p>The Flying Titans saved two more set points, with a Maika Ortiz runner tying the set at 26. But Aliyeva committed back-to-back errors -- a poor serve and a mishit -- to gift Petro Gazz with the final two points of the match.</p><p>&quot;It feels great, especially to do it in three [sets]. You never know how your team is gonna play until you play in an actual, real game. And I loved what we did today,&quot; said Vander Weide of their effort. &quot;That&#x27;s just the first of the rest of the conference, so I&#x27;m really confident in how we played today.&quot;</p><p>Aliyeva went toe-to-toe with Vander Weide and scored 26 points on 25 kills, while Cheng had 10 points.
