NCAA: San Beda’s present and future conspire in win over Lyceum

Josh Albelda, <a href="https://sports.abs-cbn.com/ncaa/basketball/photos">ABS-CBN Sports</a></figcaption></figure></div>MANILA, Philippines -- San Beda University head coach Boyet Fernandez believes the Red Lions proved their critics wrong on Thursday, when they hacked out a 75-68 triumph over the Lyceum of the Philippines University (LPU) Pirates in the NCAA Season 94 men’s basketball tournament.San Beda led by as much as 20 points, before buckling down defensively in the final minute of the game to weather the Pirates’ rally. It was the first time they had beaten Lyceum in the elimination round since Season 92.“Everybody&#x27;s been saying that we cannot beat LPU, and it&#x27;s really a good challenge,” said Fernandez. “Other guys were trying to tell us that we cannot beat LPU, that was really our motto today.”“Kasi ang daming nagsasabi na hindi kami mananalo eh, so naging barometer namin &#x27;yung saying na &#x27;yun. The two conspired in San Beda’s strong second quarter, which put the Red Lions in control of the game.Bolick, as he had done all throughout the season, ran the show for the Red Lions while also showing off his scoring touch with a couple of acrobatic buckets. But it was the 19-year-old Canlas who drew the biggest cheers, as he scored 9 points in the period in a variety of ways. The Filipino-Canadian rookie nailed a triple, scored in transition, then displayed his athleticism with a difficult lay-up.“I do congratulate James and Robert for taking good care of the offense,” said Fernandez.“As I’ve said (before), James Canlas will be the future of San Beda, and this (Bolick) is his teacher,” the coach beamed. “At least, they proved themselves tonight.”Both Bolick and Canlas finished with 18 points -- a routine game for Bolick, but a career-high for the rookie. Canlas cooled off offensively after the second quarter, but remained a disruptive force on defense. “Honestly, coach just told us to follow the game plan,” said Canlas, who was averaging just 5.2 points per game heading into Thursday’s contest. “They always tell me to play my game, just give it my all, and don’t be afraid, and just be confident.”“I think I just wanted to win bad today, so I just kept scoring. I felt good in the first half. I give credit to the guys and the bench for motivating me,” he added.Bolick, who is aiming to win a title in his final season with San Beda, was pleased to see their rookie step up in such a big game. Like his coach, he also believes that Canlas is the future of the squad. “He’s gonna be the next guy,” predicted Bolick. “I always challenge him, because he has a lot of potential.”The veteran guard jokingly said that he was somewhat jealous of Canlas, who sees regular minutes as a rookie. Even now, when he is already considered one of the best players in the collegiate level, Bolick has not forgotten how he was buried in the bench when he used to play for De La Salle University.“Pero nakita ko kasi noon, noong andoon ako sa La Salle, sila (Almond) Vosotros, tinutulungan nila ako,” he added. “So I think, it’s my responsibility. I see good potential (in Canlas), and I always challenge him because I think gagaling siya doon.”Canlas’ performance is one reason that Bolick has high hopes for the Red Lions next year, as he counts down the remaining days of his collegiate career.“Hopefully next year, our school will be in good hands with him and Evan (Nelle), those guys,” said Bolick. “Hopefully, hindi lang sila sa Final 4, but they play good as well in the finals, and win another championship for us.”It is too early to be thinking of next year, however. Canlas and Bolick still have a few weeks to play together, with the veteran looking to continue his mentorship of the rookie as they enter the most crucial stretch of the season.Canlas is only too willing to accept all the lessons that Bolick and the rest of the San Beda veterans have to offer, as he is determined to make an impact for the Red Lions even in his young age.“I think, as a rookie, you always have to step up,” said Canlas. “It’s your first year, and you have to prove something to everybody -- that you’re not just like one of those guys who just shows up, and doesn’t do anything.”“You have to give your all every time you step on the court.”(For more sports coverage, visit the <a href="http://sports.abs-cbn.com/">ABS-CBN Sports website</a>.)
