Richard Esguerra, ABS-CBN Sports</figcaption></figure></div>MANILA, Philippines -- (UPDATED) Rookie Dave Ildefonso took over in the final five minutes to pilot National University (NU) past University of Santo Tomas (UST), 69-61, for a crucial triumph in the UAAP Season 81 men’s basketball tournament on Sunday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.The 18-year-old Ildefonso scored seven of their last 12 points, helping the Bulldogs pull away in the closing stretch after the Growling Tigers made it a one-point game with 5:06 left on the clock.It was NU’s third win of the season, hiking their record to 3-6. The Growling Tigers, meanwhile, had their three-game winning streak snapped, and they fell to 4-5 in the tournament.“It’s about the 16 players responding right now,” said NU coach Jamike Jarin. “I give Troy Rike and DI (Dave Ildefonso), and the rest of the team, they should get all the acknowledgements.&quot;Ildefonso finished with 16 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists and a steal, while Rike had 13 points, 6 boards, and 4 assists. Another rookie, John Lloyd Clemente, had 12 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 dimes in a solid effort for the Bulldogs.<ul class="op-related-articles">	<li><a href="https://sports.abs-cbn.com/uaap/news/2018/10/20/uaap-angelo-kouame-playing-like-nba-idol-joel-embiid-48621">READ: Ateneo&#x27;s Angelo Kouame is playing like his NBA idol Joel Embiid</a></li></ul>NU pulled away in the third frame where they outscored UST, 20-10, for a 53-42 lead heading into the payoff period.But UST battled back, thanks to their backcourt tandem of Marvin Lee and Renzo Subido, who anchored a 14-4 exchange in the first five minutes of the fourth quarter. Subido uncorked three triples, and Lee added another long-range bomb that made it a one-point game, 57-56, with still 5:06 left to play.Unfortunately for UST, they had no answer for Ildefonso in the ensuing minutes. The rookie muscled his way to the rim for a lay-up for a 59-56 count, and after Zachy Huang scored on the other end to again trim the deficit to one point, Ildefonso again barrelled his way through for an and-1.That made it 62-58 with 4:08 to play in favor of the Bulldogs, and NU’s defense held firm in the next few possessions as they forced UST into ill-advised shots. To make matters worse for the Tigers, Subido was called for an unsportsmanlike foul that resulted in a free throw for NU’s Rev Diputado, and another bucket for Ildefonso in the ensuing possession.The Tigers last threatened when Lee drained another three-pointer that made it a four-point game, 65-61, with 2:07 left. They then got a break when Ildefonso was called for an offensive foul, his fourth, with 1:51 to play.They were unable to make the most of the opportunity, however, as their next possession came up empty, and UST rookie CJ Cansino was called for a foul on Clemente on the rebounding play. Clemente nailed two charities for a six-point spread, 67-61, and the Bulldogs’ defense would hold on from there.“It’s a collective effort,” said Jarin of their win, though he acknowledged that it was a tremendous advantage to have a talent like Ildefonso, who at just 18 years old has shown that he can take over a game.“Credit will always go to the performance of our players,” he stressed.Subido (18 points) and Lee (12 points) carried the UST offense, combining for 9 of their 10 three-pointers. But Huang was the only other player in double-digits with 11 points.
