With him in charge, the Red Lions have maintained its run of excellence that started in the mid-2000s.&quot;The winning tradition of San Beda is always pressure for me. When I took over San Beda, the first thing that was told to me was, &#x27;Hey, San Beda is always in the finals, San Beda won championships. You have to continue that legacy, or that tradition,&#x27;&quot; said Fernandez.&quot;And again, it will not happen if not with my players who played for me, and the management who really supported me. The tradition of San Beda goes a long, long way,&quot; he added.San Beda&#x27;s latest championship was sealed on Monday, when the Red Lions swept Lyceum of the Philippines University in the best-of-3 finals series of Season 94. It was their third straight title and Fernandez&#x27;s fourth as a coach, matching the total of Frankie Lim.It also marked the second straight year that the Red Lions defeated the Pirates in the NCAA finals. Last year, they were the underdogs, but leaned on their tremendous championship experience to edge Lyceum in two close games.This time, the Red Lions were more masterful. They won Game 1, 73-60, with Lyceum star CJ Perez suspended. He hailed team manager Jude Roque for his recruiting acumen, and expressed profound gratitude to team patron Manny V. Pangilinan for his trust.And he gushed about his players – not just those in his current roster but even those he handled during his first stint with San Beda.&quot;Nagpapasalamat talaga ako sa lahat ng players ko. Kung &#x27;di dahil sa kanila, hindi po kami magcha-champion, hindi po kami magti-three-peat. At sa lahat ng players ko, when I coached San Beda from 2013, 2014, 2017 and 2018. Thank you for the championship,&quot; he said.If Fernandez is reluctant to take any credit for San Beda&#x27;s success, their team manager has no such reservations.Roque, San Beda&#x27;s longtime team manager, touted Fernandez as one of the best coaches in the country on Monday, and praised him for continuing their legacy.&quot;I want to give credit also to Coach Boyet. I think Coach Boyet is one of the most underrated coaches,&quot; said Roque. &quot;In my opinion, he is a Top 3 college coach in the country.&quot;Indeed, Roque feels that right now, Fernandez is &quot;probably second only to Tab Baldwin,&quot; referring to Ateneo de Manila University&#x27;s coach who used to call the shots for the Philippine national basketball team.&quot;The way he prepares for games... If you can see, since last year we&#x27;ve been the No. 1 defensive team. It&#x27;s really been our defense that&#x27;s been winning championships for San Beda,&quot; said Roque.&quot;So he&#x27;s now a four-time NCAA champion coach, but I don&#x27;t think he&#x27;s getting enough credit, so &#x27;yun lang ang gusto ko ma-add sana.
