Tomas scored a huge win to open the UAAP Season 86 Women’s Basketball Finals.</p><p>The Growling Tigresses stunned National University, 76-72, on Wednesday at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.</p><p>Tantoy Ferrer put up a 13-point, 14-rebound double-double alongside five assists while Kent Pastrana top-scored with 15 points and six boards.</p><p>This is the first time that the España-based squad has been able to defeat National-U since August 31, 2012, wherein they scored a 74-73 overtime win against the Lady Bulldogs.</p><p>“I told the girls that during the season na we need some offensive power, pero pagdating ngayon sa championship, defense will really say a lot, and it will give you championships. I think nagawa namin yun. We clamped their shooters, walang masyadong transition offense, so I think, come Game 2, defense will speak a lot for us again,” said UST head coach Haydee Ong following the game.</p><p>Up by three in the payoff period, Bridgette Santos made a crucial turnover with only 18 seconds left in the game, and this slightly opened the door for UST an opportunity to send the game to overtime. </p><p>Angel Surada, however, fumbled the ball and wasted the possession, eventually resulting in a Santos trip to the foul line.</p><p>Santos only made one out of her two attempts, but that proved to be enough as UST is now a win away from winning their first UAAP women’s title since 2006. </p><p>Facing an eight-point deficit with only three minutes left in the game, the eight-peat-seeking Lady Bulldogs scored six straight points that were ended by a free-throw make by Stef Berberabe at the 1:13 mark.</p><p>Rocel Dionisio then made a lay-in off an assist by Pastrana with still 56 seconds remaining to extend their lead to four, but a split from Surada at the foul line gave one last chance for NU to steal the game as they got to within three, 75-72.</p><p>Camille Clarin led NU with 18 points, six assists, and five rebounds, and Karl Pingol finished with an 11-point, 10-board game.</p><p>Game 2 of the Finals will be on Sunday, December 3, 2023, 12:00 PM at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.</p><div><strong>The Scores:</strong></div><p><strong>UST 76 -– </strong>Pastrana 15, Tacatac 14, Ferrer 13, Santos 10, Villasin 10, Dionisio 6, Maglupay 4, Amatong 2, Serrano 0, Soriano 0, Ambos 0, Bron 0.</p><p><strong>NU 72 -–</strong> Clarin 18, Pingol 11, Berberabe 8, Konateh 8, Betanio 7, Cayabyab 5, Surada 5, Fabruada 4, Canuto 3, Solis 3.</p><p><strong>Quarterscores: </strong>20-12, 36-31, 54-51, 76-72</p><div><br/><strong>RELATED VIDEO</strong></div><figure class="op-interactive"><iframe allow="autoplay; fullscreen" frameBorder="0" height="100%" id="ivsplayer01" scrolling="no" src="https://player.ivideosmart.com/ivsplayer/v4/dist/html/iframe-src.html?iframeid=ivsplayer01&amp;key=e8c22c015ca9eafa76f1e3edfa03c603&amp;spid=3001339&amp;vid=2887034" width="100%"></iframe></figure><div class="iwantbar">Watch more News on <a href="https://www.iwanttfc.com/#!/browse/Genres/News/tag_id_genres/id_news" target="_blank">iWantTFC</a></div>
