Photo by Mark Demayo, ABS-CBN News</figcaption></figure></div>MANILA (UPDATED) — San Beda University refused to end the NCAA Season 99 Men’s Finals just yet.The Red Lions defeated Mapua University in Game 2, 71-65, in front of 22,465 fans on Sunday afternoon at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.Jacob Cortez was vital in SBU’s win as he put up 21 points, nine rebounds, three assists, and two steals, while Jomel Puno and Yuki Andrada finished with nine markers, each.Only ahead by a single possession in the payoff period, Cortez hit a booming triple to create a six-point separation, 67-61, with only 2:57 left in the contest.The Mapuans answered with a quick deuce, but Andrada’s three-point bomb at the 1:57 mark pretty much completed the victory for San Beda, allowing them to tie the series at 1-game apiece.Before this, down by two after the opening frame, the Mendiola-based squad banked on an 18-1 run to break away from the Cardinals in the second quarter and lead by as much as 15.Mapua fought back in the third canto as the Cardinals went on a 14-2 run to overtake San Beda, 46-44, after a pair of free-throws by Clint Escamis midway through the same frame.Mapua was able to hold their lead heading into the final 10 minutes of action, but a final push from SBU that was highlighted by a Cortez triple at the 4:17 mark allowed the Bedans to retake the lead, 62-61.James Payosing followed this with his own basket to extend their lead to three, 64-61, with more than three minutes left.Newly-hailed MVP Clint Escamis, despite finishing with 15 points, had an off night as he was limited to 4-of-21 shooting from the field.
