MANILA -- Angge Poyos and GBoy de Vega -- both hailing from the University of Santo Tomas -- were the top individual players in the 2024 V-League Collegiate Challenge.

Poyos and de Vega were named Most Valuable Players of the women's and men's divisions, respectively, on Wednesday night at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.

Poyos, the reigning UAAP Rookie of the Year, steered UST to the Finals and emerged as the top scorer of the women’s division with a total of 123 points on 106 attacks, nine kill blocks, and eight service aces. She also cracked the top 10 in spiking, serving, digging, and receiving. 

The 20-year-old pride of Balilihan, Bohol ranked second in spiking (35.81 percent success rate) and placed sixth in the service department (0.28 per set). Poyos also showcased her defensive abilities as the second-best receiver (31.41 efficiency rate) and as the tenth-best in digs (1.72 per set).

Meanwhile, De Vega and the Golden Spikers settled for a fourth-place finish after losing to National University in the bronze match of the men’s division. He was the second-best scorer with 122 points on 111 attacks, six blocks, and five aces, while placing sixth in digging (1.28 per set) and seventh in receiving (39.60 in efficiency rate).

Poyos led the women’s V-League Supreme Team along with teammates Regina Jurado (Best Opposite Spiker), Cassie Carballo (Best Setter), Em Banagua (Best Middle Blocker), and Bernadett Pepito (Best Libero).

Rounding out the awardees are Best Outside Spikers Wielyn Estoque of College of St. Benilde and Chen Tagaod of Far Eastern University, and Best Middle Blocker Zamantha Nolaso, also from CSB.

Jurado was the fourth-ranked scorer with 98 points on 78 attacks, 12 blocks, and eight aces. She is also the top spiker with a 35.94 percent success rate, while also placing fifth in serving (0.28 per set and eighth in blocking (0.41 per set).

Carballo, the reigning UAAP Best Setter, led the league in setting with 3.90 per set and was third in serving with an average of 0.31 per set, while Pepito was second in the digging department with 3.48 per set.

Outside hitters Estoque came after Poyos in scoring with a total of 116 points on 97 attacks, 12 blocks, and seven aces, while Tagaod had 67 attacks, 10 blocks, and 10 aces to finish fifth. 

The former was also sixth in spiking (31.70 percent success rate), fourth in blocking (0.46 per set), and eighth in serving (0.27 per set), while the latter was second in serving (0.36 per set), seventh in spiking (30.59 percent success rate), and ninth in digging (1.79 per set)

Meanwhile, middle blockers Nolasco and Banagua placed second and third in the blocking category with 0.85 and 0.52 per set, respectively.

In the men's division, De Vega spearheaded the V-League Supreme Team with teammate Edlyn Colinares and Joshua Magalaman of De La Salle University as Best Middle Blockers, Jelord Talisayan of Far Eastern University and Chris Hernandez, also from La Salle, as Best Outside Spikers.

Completing the cast are Best Opposite Spiker Dryx Saavedra of FEU, Best Setter Jerico Adajar, and Best Libero Menard Guerrero of La Salle.

Colinares topped the league in total blocks with 36, while also placing the number one in the blocking department with an average of 0.96 per set. Meanwhile, Magalaman was the fourth-best in blocking with 0.76 per set.

Hernandez ranked sixth in scoring with 107 points on 93 attacks, seven blocks, and seven aces, while Talisayan placed 12th with a total tally of 96 points on 89 hits, four kill blocks, and three service aces.

The La Salle outside hitter was also fifth in serving (0.21 per set), seventh in spiking (38.75 percent success rate), fourth in receiving 46.77 (efficiency rate), and eighth in digging (1.03 per set), while the FEU skipper was second in spiking (44.72 percent success rate) and sixth in receiving (43.50 efficiency rate).

Saavedra, meanwhile, is fifth overall in scoring and second in opposite spikers with 108 points on 96 attacks, eight blocks, and four aces. He was third in spiking with a 43.64 percent success rate.

Adajar rose to the top in setting with 4.53 per set, while Guerrero led the league in receiving with a 58.18 percent efficiency rate and placed second in digs with 2.38 per set.
