On Sunday (November 10) 300 surfers over 50 years old attempted to break a world record with most people riding the same wave in the Brazilian city of Santos.

Surfers arrived early, many of them having learned to surf only in their latter years.

The event was organized by a local school focused on teaching surf to people aged 50 and over. Participants said the sport keeps them healthy and also helps them with issues like depression or solitude.

Organizers said a total of 98 people rode a wave at the same time, only 13 people away from the record of 110 established in South Africa in 2009. Regardless, organizers remain hopeful that this is the largest attempt by surfers over 50 years of age.
