Tomas scored a statement win over National University in a rematch of last year’s UAAP Finals.The Golden Spikers swept the defending champion Bulldogs, 25-23, 26-24, 25-19, in the league’s Season 86 men’s volleyball tournament on Sunday at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.UST was powered by Josh Ybañez who had 13 points, 12 coming from attacks and one ace. He also had seven excellent digs and five excellent receptions, while Edlyn Colinares and Jay Rack Dela Noche chipped in eight points each.This will be the first time that the squad from Jhocson endured a defeat since Season 81 in 2019, meaning that their 34-game win streak has now reached its end.“I’m very happy that the team responded to our preparation. They responded well so masaya,” said Golden Spikers head coach Odjie Mamon“The team responded well kasi hindi lang naman pagtuturo ng techniques and yung mga tactics namin, here yung tibay ng pagiisip saka ng puso nila na they have to be patient and disciplined,” he added.Already down by two sets, the defending champions hoped to force a fourth one after they turned the España-based squad’s 19-14 lead to three, 20-17.Unfortunately for NU, a slew of errors from Jan Abanilla and Obed Mukaba kick-started the Golden Spikers’ five-to-nothing finishing kick which was highlighted by Gboy Dela Vega’s game-clinching and streak-busting ace.“Hindi nga kami nanalo eh. The opponents scored points for us, makikita niyo yun. Kami tatanggap lang kami ng regalo nila,” said Mamon as the Bulldogs committed 25 errors in the one-hour, 17-minute match.UST will be looking to bank on this victory as they face the University of the East next on Wednesday, 12 PM, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.Meanwhile, NU, who was led by Nico Almendras and Jade Disquitado after they had 15 and 13, respectively, will be hoping to enter the win column against Ateneo de Manila University on Saturday, also at 12 PM, at the MOA Arena.<div> </div>
