The Department of Education (DepEd) and the Cebu City local government signed on Friday a memorandum of agreement for the hosting of the 2024 Palarong Pambansa.

Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte and Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama led the ceremony.

"We affirm our unwavering dedication to strengthening out support for young athletes. Our primary goal is to equip them with the necessary tools to nurture discipline, resilience, and the indominable spirit required to pursue their athletic passions," Duterte said in her speech.

Thousands of athletes and delegates are expected to fly to Cebu City to participate in the games, said Cebu City Sports Commission's Chairman John Pages.

"This gives us the opportunity of not only to be able to welcome 12,000 athletes and tens and thousands of parents, friends to come to Cebu, but also to upgrade our facilities. So that is what we are focusing on right now, the rehabilitation of our facilities, our swimming pool our track oval and gym," Pages said.

"We are very blessed that here in Cebu City there are a lot of universities and malls that we are partnering with as playing venues," he added.

The dates of the games are still being finalized as there might be some adjustments in this year's school calendar.

"The original schedule ng Palaro as per calendar is still in August pa rin tayo for now, but if there is going to be an adjustment for the school calendar on school year, then there is going to be consequential adjustment to the schedule of the Palaro," DepEd Asec. Francis Bringas said.

Duterte meanwhile clarified that she did not take part in the selection process for the host of the event after DepEd evaluated the applications of various local government units.

"We are excited, excited lahat sa hosting ng Cebu city supported by the province of Cebu sa Palarong Pambansa. Sinunod nila lahat ng requirements, lahat ng tanong nasagot nila and they did it on their own. Cebu city did it on their own," Duterte told ABS-CBN News.

In the 2022 national elections, she won convincingly in Cebu Province, getting more than a million votes from the province known to have the biggest number of voters in the country.
