<div dir="ltr" style="line-height:1.38;text-align:justify;margin-top:0pt;margin-bottom:10pt"><span style="color:#000000;background-color:transparent;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre-wrap">MANILA (<strong>UPDATED</strong>) -- University of Santo Tomas remains the only unbeaten team in the UAAP Season 86 women&#x27;s volleyball tournament, after the Golden Tigresses scored a sensational five-set victory over defending champion De La Salle University.</span></div><div dir="ltr" style="line-height:1.38;text-align:justify;margin-top:0pt;margin-bottom:10pt"><span style="color:#000000;background-color:transparent;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre-wrap">The Golden Tigresses squandered a two-set advantage but found a second wind in the fifth and final set en route to a 25-18, 25-23, 14-25, 16-25, 15-12 victory in front of over 12,000 fans at the Mall of Asia Arena on Sunday night.</span></div><div dir="ltr" style="line-height:1.38;text-align:justify;margin-top:0pt;margin-bottom:10pt"><span style="color:#000000;background-color:transparent;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre-wrap">UST improved to 3-0 in the season, while La Salle fell to 2-1. With Petito anchoring their defense, the Tigresses held La Salle to just 11 attacks in the opening set; the Lady Spikers also committed nine unforced errors.</span></div><div dir="ltr" style="line-height:1.38;text-align:justify;margin-top:0pt;margin-bottom:10pt"><span style="color:#000000;background-color:transparent;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre-wrap">La Salle appeared ready to equalize after taking a 20-16 advantage in Set 2, but Perdido came alive late and scored three of the last four points of the frame, including the off-the-block hit that gave UST a two-set cushion.</span></div><div dir="ltr" style="line-height:1.38;text-align:justify;margin-top:0pt;margin-bottom:10pt"><span style="color:#000000;background-color:transparent;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre-wrap">The entry of back-up setter Julyana Tolentino and veteran opposite spiker Baby Jyne Soreño in the third set worked wonders for La Salle, along with renewed aggression from reigning Most Valuable Player Angel Canino. </span></div><div dir="ltr" style="line-height:1.38;text-align:justify;margin-top:0pt;margin-bottom:10pt"><span style="color:#000000;background-color:transparent;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre-wrap">With Thea Gagate and Amie Provido taking turns dominating at the net, the Lady Spikers overpowered the Tigresses in the third and fourth sets to send the match into a decider. There, the two teams battled to an 8-all deadlock before Canino took over for La Salle.</span></div><div dir="ltr" style="line-height:1.38;text-align:justify;margin-top:0pt;margin-bottom:10pt"><span style="color:#000000;background-color:transparent;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre-wrap">The high-leaping spiker scored off a crosscourt hit that gave La Salle a 9-8 lead, then fired an ace for a two-point cushion. A hit by Poyos stopped the bleeding for UST, but Xyza Gula&#x27;s service error restored La Salle&#x27;s two-point lead and Tolentino scored off a 1-2 play in the next rally to put the defending champions on the brink of a win. </span></div><div dir="ltr" style="line-height:1.38;text-align:justify;margin-top:0pt;margin-bottom:10pt"><span style="color:#000000;background-color:transparent;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre-wrap">UST showed no quit, however. Poyos and Banagua scored three straight kills to tie the set at 12, forcing La Salle coach Ramil de Jesus to sue for time. The Lady Spikers had a superb opportunity to snatch the lead in the next rally, but Thea Gagate&#x27;s running hit went wide, giving UST the lead for good. Gagate and Provido each had 11 points, while Alleiah Malaluan and Soreno each scored 10.
