MANILA — The University of Perpetual Help System DALTA lives to fight another day.This, after the Junior Altas overcame Colegio de San Juan de Letran, 91-90, in Game 2 of the NCAA Season 99 juniors’ basketball Finals on Wednesday at the FilOil EcoOil Centre in San Juan City.Jan Pagulayan led Perpetual’s charge, putting up 23 points, 10 rebounds, an assist, and a steal, while Amiel Acido finished with 19 markers, five rebounds, four steals, and two assists.Mark Gojo Cruz and Lebron Jhames Daep also stood out for the Junior Altas and finished with 16 and 13, respectively.Tied at 88 with only 1:22 left in the game, Syrex Silorio converted a jumper to separate Letran by two, 90-88.Freshly crowned MVP Acido then answered with a booming triple to overtake the Squires and regain the lead, 91-90, with 55 seconds left in the contest.Pagulayan was called for a technical foul in the following play, sending Alex Gazzingan to the foul line, but he missed his attempt to tie the game.Plays after, following a missed trey from Acido, Silorio was fouled on his way to the basket and was given opportunities to tie the game or grab the lead.Unfortunately for the Squires, he missed both of his chances at the 15-foot line, and this allowed Perpetual to extend the series into a deciding Game 3.Earlier, the Las Piñas cagers started the game in a strong manner, firing a nine-to-two start after three treys from Gojo Cruz.Letran, however, quickly answered with a 12-4 run which was ended by a lay-in by Daniel Padilla as they overtook Perpetual, 14-13.Both teams exchanged baskets as the game progressed, but the Squires imposed themselves over the Junior Altas in the second after a streak of baskets from Padilla, Titing Manalili, and George Diamante.Letran even held a 54-36 lead with four minutes left in the first half, but the elimination round’s top team refused to give in and ended the quarter with an 18-5 run as they headed into the break. Joph Cleopas’ troops opened the second half with their guns blazing yet again and scored nine straight points to tie the contest and make it a ball game. Leading Allen Ricardo’s team was Silorio who had 20 points and six boards, while Diamante powered Letran with an 18-point, 15 rebound game.The deciding Game 3 of the series will be on Saturday, 9;30 AM, at the same San Juan Arena.
