Jimmy Alapag ready to help Gilas in FIBA Olympic qualifiers

served the Philippines by way of the men’s national basketball team from 2007 at the FIBA Asia Championship in Tokushima, Japan until 2015 at the William Jones cup in Taiwan.</p><p>In the said period he hauled several accomplishments for the Philippines, including the 2013 FIBA Asia championship silver finish. </p><p>This was key for the country to enter the 2014 FIBA World Cup in Spain, thus ending a 34-year drought.</p><p>Alapag’s basketball journey continues, this time in the U.S., as player development coach of the Sacramento Kings. </p><div><a 255, 255)"></a><br/></div><br/></div></div><p>He spoke to ABS-CBN News North America on the sidelines of Kings’ game this week with the Toronto Raptors.</p><p>With Gilas Pilipinas having a small pool, Alapag said there could be an advantage as players will get to know each other better, compared to having a new set of players each tournament.</p><p>He added that one key factor is vital for the success of the program.</p><p> “The biggest key for the Gilas now is for the players to stay healthy,” he said. “It’s going to be important for all the new generation of Gilas players to make sure that they’re taking care of themselves.&quot;</p><p>He added: &quot;It’s going to be taxing playing in the PBA or the B-League in Japan and then still having national team commitments.”</p><p>Alapag said he met Coach Tim Cone in Las Vegas last year for the NBA Summer League.</p><p>While the two were able to chat for a little, Alapag said they have yet to discuss on how he could help the Gilas for the FIBA Olympic qualifying tournament in July.</p><p>&quot;At that time he (Cone) wasn’t running the national program, so nothing as of yet. I’m obviously busy here doing my best to help the Kings,&quot; he added.</p><p>The NBA Summer League starts on July 12 while the FIBA Olympic qualifying tournament will run from July 2 to 7 at Riga Latvia.</p><p>Just like before, Alapag said he is willing to help Gilas end its 52-year Olympic appearance drought.</p><p>“Absolutely I’d be open to it, somebody would just have to reach out,” he said.</p>
