MANILA — The first week of the NCAA Season 99 volleyball tournaments was ruled by rookies who came from Colegio de San Juan de Letran and San Beda University.Gia Maquilang of the Letran Lady Knights made a name for herself in her first taste of NCAA volleyball action and was named as the Player of the Week of the women’s division for the period April 7 to 14.“Masaya po, tapos may konting pressure kasi natural lang po &#x27;yun. Tapos lagi kaming pinu-push ni Coach [Oliver Almadro] na huwag kang matakot. Be positive,&quot; said Maquilang, who led Letran to its second-straight NCAA beach volleyball title earlier this year.“Sinasabi po lagi ni Coach O na face our fears at may tiwala po siya sa amin dahil nag-practice po kami para rito,” she added.The 20-year-old delivered 17 points in the Intramuros-based squad’s 16-25, 25-17, 25-17, 25-17 triumph over Season 97 finalist Arellano University, and she followed it with a 19-point, 11-dig performance during the Muralla spikers’ victory over University of Perpetual Help System Dalta, 25-21, 25-20, 30-28.Their win over the Lady Altas — the first one in four years — allowed Maquilang and Letran to tally a spotless record in two games.The Bohol native earned the POW award over Lyceum of the Philippines University’s Joan Doguna and two-time defending titlists De La Salle-College of St. Benilde’s (CSB) Michelle Gamit.Meanwhile, Van Book also led the Red Spikers to an unbeaten record in his first week in the grand-old league.The 20-year-old won three straight games last week, with Book putting up 24 points and 12 receptions against Lyceum, 32 markers against CSB, and 21 points against his former team San Sebastian College-Recoletos.“Siyempre masaya kasi parang bumawi ako sa kanila. Wala naman po akong masamang intensyon. Gusto ko lang pong manalo para masaya ang team namin,” the 6-foot-1 young star said, who was formerly recruited by San Sebastian during the pandemic.“Hindi ko naman aakalain na ako ang magdadala ng scoring sa team. Pressured po ako kasi kailangan ko pong galingan kasi yun po ang nakita nila sa akin,” he added.Book reigned over fellow standouts Marvin Romero of Emilio Aguinaldo College, Kyle Villamor of San Sebastian, and the reigning MVP Louie Ramirez of the three-peat champions Perpetual Altas.
