Handout/PNVF</div>MANILA — A team from Umingan, Pangasinan emerged as surprise champions of the Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF) Under-18 Championships on Sunday.The team stunned VNS-Savouge in a five-setter, 25-23, 23-25, 23-25, 25-17, 16-14.Calling the shots for the squad was Umingan National High School&#x27;s head of Mathematics, head coach Eusebio Solis.Leading the way for them was Michael Angelo Fernandez who was awarded as the boys&#x27; Most Valuable Player and First Best Open Hitter.&quot;It&#x27;s tough, too tough, we&#x27;ve gone through much challenges,&quot; said Solis, who in his youth represented Pangasinan in athletics but not in volleyball, after the game last Sunday.&quot;But we proved something with this victory, that we, provincial teams, could stay in stride or even beat the strong teams from the big city,&quot; added the mentor, who admitted that he did some arithmetic of sorts in figuring out how he could become a volleyball coach and teach the fundamentals of the sports to kids, despite having no experience in the sport.&quot;I went to my mentors,&quot; Solis shared.The boys are now set to compete in July&#x27;s Palarong Pambansa, but Solis revealed that their road to victory was not as sweet as their triumph. Solis&#x27; team traveled to Laoag City for the Palaro regionals and defeated Ilocos Norte to earn the spot for the Palarong Pambansa in Cebu.They immediately took a plane ride right after the match to catch their 5:30 PM semifinals match against Canossa Academy of Lipa City at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum. &quot;We got to Rizal Memorial at 3:30 PM, enough for the team to recover and prepare for the semifinals,&quot; Solis said of his team, which defeated Canossa Academy in four sets. Meanwhile, University of Santo Tomas defeated National University in the girls&#x27; division&#x27;s championship, 25-17, 17-25, 25-20, 25-23.Kimberly Rubin, who was also hailed as the girls&#x27; MVP, led the España-based squad in their four-set victory. &quot;Good job by the girls,&quot; UST head coach Lerma Giron said. &quot;All of them stood out in difficult times.&quot;Rubin was also named the First Best Open Hitter, while Avril Denise Bron (First Best Middle Blocker) and Lianne Penuliar (Second Best Middle Blocker) also earned awards for their contributions to UST&#x27;s championship campaign. In the tournament&#x27;s Battle for Third, Canossa Academy and Kings&#x27; Montessori bagged the bronze medals in the boys and girls division, respectively.Canossa defeated Angatleta Orion, 25-16, 25-23, 21-25, 25-20, with the help of the boys&#x27; division&#x27;s Second Best Open Hitter, Luke Anton Macatangay.On the other hand, Kings&#x27; Montessori swept De La Salle-Lipa, 25-19, 25-18, 25-14, led by the Best Libero, Jayrelle Mesa.Here are the rest of the awardees:<div>Boys Division</div>Roderick Medina (VNS-Savouge) - Best Opposite HitterLawrence Lanting (Angatleta Sports-Orion, Bataan) - Best Libero  <div>Girls Division</div>Althea Sumague (De La Salle-Lipa) - Second Best Open HitterHarlyn Serneche (NU) - Best Opposite Hitter Cheska Peñol (NU) - Best Setter<div>Classification matches results:</div><div>Boys Division</div>Battle for 5th place - De La Salle-Lipa def Hermosa Volleyball: 25-20, 26-24, 13-25, 25-20Battle for 7th place - Philippine Christian University def.
