Photo from UAAP Media</figcaption></figure></div>MANILA — De La Salle University survived a tough showing from University of the East to win their second straight game without top star Angel Canino.The Lady Spikers escaped with a five-set triumph over the Lady Warriors, 25-23, 21-25, 25-17, 22-25, 15-12, in their UAAP Season 86 women’s volleyball tournament clash on Tuesday at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.Thea Gagate starred for La Salle, putting up 22 points that were built on 17 attacks, three blocks, and two digs, Shevana Laput continued her stellar play and delivered 21 markers, while Alleiah Malaluan scored 12 points as well as five receptions.Julia Coronel also displayed stellar playmaking, posting 22 of DLSU’s 23 excellent sets, while Amie Provido provided 11 pointsTied at two sets apiece following a valiant effort from UE, La Salle went on a seven-to-two run in the decider which was ended by a strong kill by Provido.The Recto spikers were able to get as close as one, 7-6, following an attack by Casiey Dongallo, but Laput answered back with a cross-court kill to re-extend their advantage by two.The two teams exchanged attacks in the next possessions and were only separated by two, 14-12, late in the game, but a Coronel drop eventually gave DLSU the hard-earned victory. Earlier, after splitting the first two sets, La Salle showed its dominance in the third frame as they looked to end the contest in four sets.The Lady Warriors, however, bounced back in the fourth and saw themselves up 22-16 midway through the set.UE’s win in the fourth was then halted for a while, as after the Lady Warriors appeared to have won 25-20, officials belatedly called a rotation error which gave La Salle another chance.An attack from Malaluan even gave the Lady Spikers a slight glimmer of hope as they cut the lead to two, 24-22, but an attack from the Lady Warriors finally ended the game for them.The Taft-based squad moved up to 9-1 and is now tied with University of Sto. Tomas as the top teams in the standings, while UE fell to 2-8 and now sits at No.6.DLSU will be looking to remain unbeaten in the second round, but it will be a tough task as they are to face National University on Sunday, 4 PM, at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay.Meanwhile, the Lady Warriors will be looking to snap their skid when they go up against Ateneo de Manila University on the same day at 2 PM.
