MANILA (UPDATED) — The Lady Bulldogs’ bite proved to be more ferocious in Game 1. National University swept University of Santo Tomas, 25-23, 25-20, 25-20, in the first game of their UAAP Season 86 women’s volleyball Finals series in front of 20,955 fans on Saturday at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City. Alyssa Solomon and Bella Belen led the Jhocson-based hitters as NU is now a win away from clinching the championship, with the former putting up 17 points that were built on 14 attacks and three blocks, and the latter posting 13 markers, eight digs, and six receptions. Despite their victory, however, Season 86 MVP frontrunner Belen remained critical of her team, saying that National U remains in need of more improvement, especially on their number of errors. “Kahit nanalo kami ngayong Game 1, I think medyo so-so pa rin ‘yung laro namin,” she told a few reporters after the post-game presser. ”Yung errors namin, kailangan naming ma-minimize. Yun nga, thankful ako kasi yung number of errors ng UST, almost same sa amin. Kasi kung ibang team po yun, tapos ganon karami yung errors namin, siguro po talo kami,” Belen said of her squad who had 19 errors to the Tigresses’ 18. “Yun po yung isa naming iwo-work out, and yung pagiging kalmado lang muna namin. Yung UST, ma depensa eh. So kami, kailangan andoon yung patience sa paaglalaro na hanggat hindi namamatay yung bola, talagang hindi kami titigil,” she continued. So nung na-injure po si Angge, sabi namin, kailangan yung respeto namin sa kalaban, andoon pa rin at hindi kami makampante. Yun yung ikakatalo namin,” explained the Season 84 ROTY-MVP,” while also admitting that it gave them flashbacks of the Season 85 Finals wherein their teammate Sheena Toring also suffered a leg injury. ”Nakakatakot po kasi yun yung biggest fear ng players eh, na ma-injure. Mahirap talagang makabalik from injury. So sobrang nagulat kami kanina, kaya sabi namin sana nothing serious talaga.” Meanwhile, stepping up for Kung Fu Reyes’ squad were Jonna Perdido who posted 17 points, Reg Jurado who had 10, and Detdet Pepito who finished with 16 digs, 15 receptions, and an excellent set. Poyos produced seven markers, eight receptions, and a pair of digs before she exited the game with crutches and a walking boot. Alam ko kung ano ‘yung kaya naming gawin. Nakasama ko na sila for ilang years. Kahit nanalo kami, magsisipag pa rin kami sa training kasi for sure, paghahandan kami ng UST and siyempre kailangang hindi kami magpapatalo,” emphasized Belen.
