MANILA — The battle for P1 had been tough from lights out to the finish line, but Filipino racer Zach David had the force with him to bag his first podium for the 2024 season of Formula Regional European Championship by Alpine during race 1 of round 2 at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium on Saturday, May 25.

The 16-year-old driver crossed the finish line in fourth place, but was promoted to P3 after the post-penalties were imposed.

David had a good start having qualified for P5. He quickly moved up to P2 less than 2 minutes into the race.

The Maltese-licensed driver eventually led the race after a successful attack on Trident’s Roman Bilinski at the Bus-Stop. However, David’s lead was short-lived as he moved back to P2 behind Bilinski.

He further moved back to P4 after a double overtake by RPM’s Noah Strømsted and Prema Racing’s Rafael Camara, with whom he had a brief contact in the battle for P3.

Ahead of him at P4, Strømsted grabbed the reins of the race after a successful overtake on Bilinski. Camara stayed at P3.

Camara, a Scuderia Ferrari Academy driver, managed to overtake Bilinski, with just about 5 minutes and half plus one lap left in the race.

A wheel-to-wheel battle ensued between Camara and Strømsted for the race victory in the final moments, but the latter’s defense was not enough to fend off the Brazilian driver.

Camara ultimately won this race, as well as the second race of this round held Sunday, May 26.

David meanwhile qualified and finished P14 for the second race, based on provisional results.

The Filipino driver collected 15 championship points this weekend to boost his and his team R-ace GP’s chances of winning this year’s title.

He is at 7th place in the individual standings as of this writing.

Round 3 will be held at Circuit Zandvoort, Netherlands on June 8-9.
