Photo from UAAP Media."/><span class="fr-inner" style="text-align:left">The UST Golden Spikers. <em>Photo from UAAP Media.</em></span></span></span></div><p>MANILA (<strong>UPDATE</strong>) — University of Santo Tomas is back in the UAAP men&#x27;s volleyball Finals.</p><p>The fourth-seeded Golden Spikers defeated No.1 seed Far Eastern University in four sets, 25-18, 21-25, 26-24, 26-24, during their Season 86 Final Four do-or-die clash on Wednesday at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.</p><p>Josh Ybañez had a stellar showing for the Odjie Mamon-mentored team, putting up 19 points, 13 receptions, and six digs, while following him were Gboy De Vega who poured in 18 points, one of which came as the game-winning hit, and Sherwin Umandal&#x27;s 16 markers alongside seven digs.</p><p>&quot;Kung pwede nga lang sabihin ko na job done na ko eh kasi ang personal goal ko is finals. Pero the players, they wanted more. So why not? Pwede naman mag overachieve,&quot; said Mamon after the game.</p><p>&quot;Yun ang magiging motivation namin nitong coming days na let&#x27;s claim your goals. Ako, dun lang ako nagtatrabaho, during the preparation, not during the match itself. I just let them play the whole match. Konti lang yung interference ko in terms of sa allowed ako. I was actually a cheerleader earlier, not their coach. I let them play and they delivered.&quot;</p><p>&quot;Yun lang ipapaalala ko sa kanila, magiging motivation namin yan para maganda laban namin sa NU,&quot; he added.</p><p>Dux Yumbao also delivered in their triumph as he tossed all of UST&#x27;s 13 excellent sets while also tallying three points and five digs.</p><p>The Golden Spikers even made history in their victory as they became the first team in the Final 4 era to have entered the Finals as the No. 4 seed.</p><p>According to Ybañez, they were able to do so by just believing in the small chance that they had when they entered the semifinals.</p><p>&quot;Of course, masaya kami kasi nga po kami pala yung una. ‘Di namin pinapansin at ‘di namin inisip na dahil kami ang No. 4, so wala na kaming chance mag Finals. As long as may spot, kahit tiny spot lang na makapasok kami sa finals, gagawan at gagawan namin ng paraan,&quot; he said.</p><p>This eventually translated into the taraflex as when both teams were tied at one set apiece, UST and FEU went to compete in a close encounter in the third as they were tied at 24 late in the frame.</p><p>De Vega, however, powered UST to the third-set victory after he converted back-to-back off-the-block kills for the Golden Spikers, and this allowed them to hold a 2-1 lead over the Tams. </p><p>The two teams continued to exchange blows in the fourth and were even tied at 24 following a net fault from UST, but Umandal and De Vega hit consecutive off-the-block hits to finally book their spot in the Finals.</p><p>The España-based hitters are now set for a championship round rematch against National University who eliminated De La Salle University earlier on Wednesday.</p><div><a class="fr-green fr-strong" href="https://news.abs-cbn.com/sports/2024/5/8/uaap-nu-clinches-9th-straight-finals-appearance-ousts-dlsu-1454">READ: NU clinches 9th straight finals appearance, ousts DLSU</a></div><p>The Bulldogs swept the Golden Spikers during their best-of-three Finals series last year as National U completed a three-peat in the men&#x27;s division.</p><p>On the other hand, leading FEU was Dryx Saavedra who had 20 markers, Jayjay Javelona who finished with 16 points and six each of digs and receptions, and Andrei Delicana who posted 12. </p><p>Unfortunately for the Tams, they have also become the first team in the Final Four era to lose a spot in the Finals against a fourth-seeded squad.</p><div><br/></div><div><br/></div><div><br/></div>
