Photo from PVL."/><span class="fr-inner" style="text-align:left">UST assistant coach Shaq Delos Santos. <em>Photo from PVL. </em></span></span></span></div><p>Shaq Delos Santos has also contributed to their success so far this season with the Cignal HD Spikers tactician imparting his veteran smarts to the team. </p><p>But aside from this, Delos Santos also possesses a vital feather in his cap -- he was the coach of the last UST team to win the UAAP women&#x27;s volleyball championship.</p><p>Delos Santos called the shots for the Golden Tigresses in 2010, when a squad led by Aiza Maizo-Pontillas and Rhea Dimaculangan swept La Salle to take home the Season 72 championnship.</p><p>But for Delos Reyes, it is not his championship experience but rather their collective efforts as coaches that have helped them this year. </p><div><a class="fr-green fr-strong" href="https://news.abs-cbn.com/sports/2024/5/5/-thank-you-sa-mga-bashers-pepito-ust-answer-all-doubts-en-route-to-the-finals-2304">READ: Pepito, UST answer all doubts en route to the Finals</a></div><p>“Sobrang happy ko talaga. Grabe rin ‘yung naging preparation din kasi ng team,” he told a few reporters just before he left the MOA Arena last Sunday.</p><p>“Then ‘yung pag-absorb sa’kin nila Coach Kung Fu, nila Coach Ian, and then siyempre ‘yung UST community. Sobrang thankful ako kasi siyempre nakapasok sa Finals and then kasama ulit ako ngayon. For me, naging malaking factor sa akin na nakatulong, nakapag-share. Good thing din kasi sa’ming mga coaches, balanced eh.” </p><p>“Wala kaming tinitignan na mataas dito, ikaw lang ganito. Kumbaga kami, fair lang lahat ng tingin namin sa bawat isa and ang good thing kasi, ‘yung respect naman namin sa bawat position,” he continued. </p><p>Delos Santos sees some similarities and differences between his 2010 squad and the 2024 Tigresses. </p><div><ivs-player data-ivs-key="e8c22c015ca9eafa76f1e3edfa03c603" data-ivs-spid="3001339" data-ivs-vid="3033231"></ivs-player> <script src="https://player.ivideosmart.com/ivsplayer/v4/dist/js/loader.js"></script></div><p>“Yung fighting spirit talaga ng mga bata [parehas]. Pero actually, ‘yung lineup namin that season, mas contender ‘yun kaysa dito. ‘Yun, mga beterano na rin ‘yun eh. Kilala naman natin lahat ‘yun. Then itong mga ‘to, nakakatuwa kasi ang babata pero alam mo ‘yung talagang palaban.” </p><p>“Talagang every training, ang dami nilang pinipilit na matutunan, ginugusto nilang gawin, kasi alam nila na pagdating ng game, talagang magiging worth it siya. Parehong palaban pero magkaiba lang ng age nu’ng time na ‘yun,” he continued, while also briefly describing how Angge Poyos, Detdet Pepito, Cassie Carballo, and the rest of the present Tigresses have defied the odds so far this year. </p><p>“Imagine noong nag-start kami, tinitignan nila ‘yung team namin na ganito lang, makikita niyo naman ang liliit. Pero grabe, pagdating sa training, napaka sisipag. Gusto lang talaga nilang matuto, absorb lang ng lahat ng binabato namin sa kanila. Pagdating ng game, more on application na lang. Kung mapapansin niyo, medyo nag struggle pa nga ‘pag may ibang set na pumapangit ‘yung performance namin. Pero good thing kasi, kahit mga bata ‘tong mga ‘to, grabe ‘yung pag-step-up and ‘yung performance nila talaga,” he explained. </p><p>But now that they are in the Finals against the NU Lady Bulldogs, how can UST end their more-than-a-decade-long title drought? </p><div><a class="fr-green fr-strong" href="https://news.abs-cbn.com/sports/2024/5/8/lady-bulldogs-clinch-third-straight-finals-appearance-at-lady-tams-expense-1944">READ: National U dismisses FEU for 3rd straight Finals appearance</a></div><p>“Tuloy lang kami sa sistema na ginagawa namin kasi nakikita naman namin ‘yung result,” Delos Santos said, before pointing out a few specifics.</p><p>“Number one, ‘yung serve and receive namin, kailangang maging consistent talaga. ‘Yun ‘yung nagiging main weapon namin kasi nga maliliit nga kami. Then floor defense. Mas more on floor defense kasi ‘yung counter attack naman, kaya naman naming makipagsabayan.” </p><p>“Siguro maging consistent na lang din kami mula start hanggang dulo, kailangang talagang aggressive lagi at nasa right timing naman kami,” he ended. </p><p>Game 1 of the NU-UST best-of-three series will start on Saturday at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.
