MANILA – The NorthPort Batang Pier had another motivation coming into their 2024 PBA Governors' Cup match against the Converge FiberXers.

Following FiberXers assistant coach and PBA two-time MVP Danny Ildefonso's comments regarding NorthPort allegedly being a "farm team," the Batang Pier were challenged, and they answered back with a statement win, 135-109, on Thursday at Ninoy Aquino Stadium behind Arvin Tolentino's 51-point masterpiece.

Ildefonso had recently been fined P20,000 by the PBA for alleging that NorthPort is a "farm team." His son, Dave, has yet to sign a contract with the Batang Pier after being selected 5th overall in the PBA Rookie Draft on July 14.

Coach Bonnie Tan revealed they were riled up before the game because of the stories they read, with Ildefonso having given them bulletin board material.

"Siguro, gusto ko rin magpasalamat sa mga ganung write-up. Because of that write-up, na-challenge 'yung team—not only the players, but also 'yung buong team namin," said Tan during the postgame press conference.

"Prior to the game, we opened up that topic, about that write-up. I think we were all challenged with that statement," Tan also said.

Thanks to that motivation, the Batang Pier rose to a 2-1 win-loss card in Group A. Converge, meanwhile, suffered their second loss in four games.

Tan also bared that he and Ildefonso shook hands after the game.

"Okay naman, kamayan. Sports, fair naman 'yung laro natin kanina," he said.
