Marcos Jr. graces the 2024 Olympic Day: Paris Olympic Send-Off ceremony at Ayuntamiento de Manila, Intramuros in Manila on June 21, 2024. <em>Niño Jesus Orbeta, PPA pool</em></span></span></span></div><p>MANILA -- An inquiry into the state of sports development and funding in the Philippines has been sought at the House of Representatives, following the Olympic victory of Filipino gymnast Carlos Yulo.</p><p>Lawmakers from the Makabayan bloc filed on Tuesday House Resolution 1877, which urges the lower chamber to assess the allocation of funds and resources for the country’s sports programs and identify the funding and support gaps for athletes.</p><p>Under the 2025 National Expenditure Program, the Philippine Sports Commission will get a budget cut of 37.24% as the Marcos Jr. administration proposes a budget of P725.7 million for the PSC, down from this year’s budget of P1.15 billion. </p><p>The Makabayan lawmakers, meanwhile, called &quot;minimal&quot; the proposed increase in 2025 budget for the National Academy of Sports to P253.29 million from the current year’s funding of P230.58 million.</p><p>&quot;Kasi nakita natin… binabaan sa (proposed) 2025 budget, &#x27;yung budget ng Philippine Sports Commission,&quot; ACT Teachers Party List Representative France Castro, who is one of the authors of the measure, said.</p><p>&quot;I-identify natin &#x27;yung mga gaps in fundings, support sa mga athletes, according sa mga sports discipline, develop strategies to improve long-term sports development programs, and explore ways to enhance infrastructure and training facilities for athletes at syempre formulate facilities to ensure consistent and adequate support doon sa ating mga athletes,&quot; she added.</p><p>&quot;Gusto lang din natin na syempre ipanawagan &#x27;yung pag-suporta hindi lang after na manalo na ng medals &#x27;yung ating mga Olympians. Gusto natin &#x27;yung suporta, kung mayroong financial assistance na dapat ibigay, dapat during training pa lang, kasi &#x27;di natin alam mas marami pa &#x27;yung mga kabataan natin na makakapag-take home din ng medalya para sa bansa kung sapat talaga &#x27;yung ating mga sports programs hanggang sa local level, di ba?
