Photo from UAAP Media."/><span class="fr-inner" style="text-align:left">The Eraserheads’ Ely Buendia during the UAAP Season 87 Opening Ceremonies, September 7, 2024, at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City. <em>Photo from UAAP Media.</em></span></span></span></div><p>MANILA — The UAAP commenced its 87th season in style as the league brought music and color in what is considered as one of, if not, its best opening ceremony ever. </p><p>Spearheaded by hosts University of the Philippines (UP), the UAAP welcomed its student-athletes, officials, alumni, and fans with a spectacular display on Saturday at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City, and headlining the event was legendary OPM band — State U&#x27;s own Eraserheads.</p><p>&quot;Akalain niyo, this is our first time to play at Araneta? Wow,&quot; said EHeads frontman Ely Buendia in the middle of their seven-song set at the Big Dome together with Buddy Zabala, Marcus Adoro, and Raimund Marasigan. </p><p>The Eraserheads electrified Araneta with Alapaap as their opening song, and the piece that followed it blended the collegiate feels of the UAAP, Sembreak.</p><p>Timeless hits Ligaya and Pare Ko went after, while the EHeads dedicated Minsan to their Alma Mater. &quot;This next song is our ode to our school,&quot; said Buendia.</p><p>Magasin came next, while the EHeads ended their appearance with the all-time fan-favorite Ang Huling El Bimbo.</p><script async="" src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charSet="utf-8"></script><p>Aside from the Philippines&#x27; Fab Four, Johnoy Danao, another UP alumni, also graced the Opening Ceremonies as he serenaded Araneta with his song ‘Kasama&#x27; to start the festivities, while the UP Symphony Orchestra played a rendition of their school hymn ‘UP Naming Mahal.&#x27;</p><p>The &quot;Maroon 4,&quot; which was composed of UP products Maysh Baay and Bon Sundiang of Moonstar88, Lean Ansing&#x27;s Slapshock, and Dave Delfin of Franco was also among the performers. </p><p>Completing the star-studded cast were UPeepz, P-Pop group Kaia, Kontra Gapi, and the UP College of Arts and Letters&#x27; ethnic Music and Dance Ensemble.</p><p>Meanwhile, Season 87 President, UP Chancellor Carlo Vistan II officially opened the games prior to the performance of the Eraserheads. </p><div style="margin-bottom:0px;line-height:normal;-webkit-text-stroke-width:0px;-webkit-text-stroke-color:rgb(0, 0, 0)"><span><span class="fr-img-caption fr-fic fr-dib" style="width:960px"><span class="fr-img-wrap"><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1725695400144IMG_4865.jpeg" style="width:960px" class="fr-fic fr-dib"/><span class="fr-inner" style="text-align:left">UAAP Season 87 Opening Ceremonies. <em>Photo from UAAP Media.</em></span></span></span></span></div><p>&quot;Let this season be a testament to the unity, the excellence, and the sportsmanship that define the UAAP,&quot; he said. &quot;This season, we make our athletes stronger, better, together.&quot;</p><p>Following the festivities, the UP Fighting Maroons and their Katipunan neighbors Ateneo de Manila University will kick off the men’s basketball action tonight, 6:30 p.m., at the same venue. </p><div><a class="fr-green fr-strong" href="https://news.abs-cbn.com/sports/2024/9/6/up-ateneo-look-to-set-the-tone-for-uaap-season-87-1849">READ: UP, Ateneo look to set the tone for UAAP Season 87</a></div><div><br/></div>
