The former Ateneo de Manila University guard, who was previously dealt from TerraFirma Dyip alongside Andreas Cahilig for the services of Terrence Romeo and Vic Manuel, made his SMB debut on Tuesday in a victory against the Phoenix Fuel Masters.

Tiongson scattered eight points and five assists — one of even translated into Marcio Lassiter’s go-ahead bucket — but he downplayed his contributions in his first game as a Beerman.

“Sarap ng pagkapanalo, pero there’s still more work to be done,” he said after the game. “Kulang pa yung laro ko, and may times na nag aalangan pa ako sa laro ko. I’m still adjusting, one week pa lang naman ako sa team.”

Tiongson played for five years with TerraFirma, from 2019 to mid-2024.

In his stint there, he was able to lead the squad into a quarterfinals appearance once, which is why Tiongson said that moving on from the Dyip to SMB brought him mixed emotions.

“Bittersweet po. Siyempre, mataas yung pangarap ko sa TerraFirma,” he offered. “Gusto ko maging successful yung team, pero changing of the guards na eh. Gusto nilang magpa-bata.”

However, Tiongson added that it was just the right time for him to finally move on given the circumstances that the squad has chosen to do.

“Kailangan ko na ring mag move on. Yung nagawa namin, tapos na yung nagawa namin for TerraFirma,” said Tiongson of his former squad which also traded Stephen Holt and Isaac Go before the start of PBA Season 49.

“Mas makakabuti rin yun sa kanila, pero hoping pa rin ako for their success. Plano po talaga ng Diyos na [sa San Miguel] ako napunta.”

And now that he’s in San Miguel, Tiongson — much like his days wearing Ateneo’s Blue and White in his college years — knows that it’s now championship or bust every conference with the Beermen.

“Same dito sa San Miguel [yung culture], pero ‘di ko naman po siya iniisip,” he said. “I’m just in the moment kasi naga-adjust rin ako eh. May winning tradition sila na championship or bust, and gusto ko makatulong. I’m not trying to be a star, I want to help the team and also win my first championship in the PBA.”

Instead, Tiongson emphasized that his priority is getting acclimated and adjusted to his new team.

“First two days of practices, nag aalangan ako, pero ine-encourage nila ako na: ‘Di ka namin kinuha para mamasa,” he shared. “Pero in terms of aggressiveness, kailangan ko ring i-balance, hindi yung nakatingin lang agad sa ring.”

“Ang dami kong mga magagaling na kakami, sila June Mar [Fajardo], Marico, and kahit yung mga off the bench, so ang daming talents na kailangan ko sila bigyan muna,” he added.
