Photo from PBA Images.MANILA — Mark Nonoy was at the forefront of TerraFirma Dyip’s breakthrough win in the PBA Season 49 Commissioner’s Cup.</div>The speedy guard out of De La Salle University posted his career-game of 33 points with four rebounds and four assists in their stunning 117-108 upset of the TNT Tropang GIGA on Wednesday, and this helped the Dyip to end their conference in a positive manner after 11 defeats.“Ups-and-downs yung team namin, sa practices namin may mga nawawalan na ng gana, pero we stuck together,” he said during the postgame presser. “May mga leaders din sa amin na [nagsabing] last push na ‘to, so nag respond lang kami as a team.”Nonoy’s 5-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc extended to his teammates as they finished with 14 three-pointers in 29 attempts (48.% FG), but the La Carlota, Negros Occidental native said that among his biggest inspirations was facing his childhood hero — TNT legend Jayson Castro.<div><a class="fr-green fr-strong" href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/sports/basketball/2025/1/22/winless-no-more-terrafirma-upsets-tnt-in-dominant-fashion-1910">READ: Winless no more: TerraFirma upsets TNT in dominant fashion</a></div>“Na-inspire lang ako kay kuya Jayson Castro. Childhood ko pa lang, napapanood ko na siya eh,” said the 5-foot-9, one-time UAAP champion guard.“Isa [ako] sa PBA players na inspired sa kanya. Gusto kong ma-challenge sa kanya kasi idol ko siya eh,” he continued.During his amateur and collegiate years, the former University of Santo Tomas ace already drew comparisons to Castro mainly due to their speed on the hardwood, and for Nonoy, this game was just about finally making a name for himself now that they are opponents.“Thankful ako na na-overcome ko yung laro ko, nakalaro naman ako ng maayos,” he said. “Tinrabaho ko ‘to eh. Isa ‘to sa pangarap ko, so kailangan ko lang mag build ng sarili kong pangalan.”“Gagawa lang ako ng kung anong kailangan sa team namin, so siguro, I belong to this league,” he added.However, Nonoy still credited Castro and the advice that the former ‘Best Point Guard in Asia’ gave him during the game.“May konting advice lang siya sa akin, na [improve lang yung] decision making and control lang yung speed,” he shared. “Pero nung second-half, medyo focused na sila kasi gusto na nilang dumikit sa amin eh. “Fortunately for Nonoy, and unfortunately for Castro, the former quickly picked up on the latter’s advice as it eventually helped him display his best game in the PBA so far.
